Medina's coming and were going to leave everything we have on that stage!

The ISSMA scoresheet scores two captions, Vocal and Visual. caption carries 200 points. 100 points for Technique and 100 points for Artistry. You gain the points through boxes which designate your execution of performance and what points are appropriate for that execution. For example, vocal boxes for technique contain tone quality, intonation, diction, vowel uniformity etc. The artistry box contains areas like phrasing, dynamics, etc. Box 1 or 2 generally means bad execution of these things with boxes 3 and 4 being mediocre. A solid score would be a Box 4 which I believe is 80-90 points and the best being Box 5 which is 90 to 100 points. The same goes for the Visual captions. The visual boxes are different b/c they don't just simply score choreography. It really does score ALL of the visual aspects of the show including choreo (style, creativity, originality, and execution), staging, blocking, formations, props, transitions, costumes, etc. Most scoresheets would break all that up and give each area something like 10 points. That's one of the quirks I was referring to. Also, at the end of contests scores are then weighted so that the final tally is 60% vocal and 40% visual.
The thing that I ABSOLUTELY hate about this is that it seems to only give points for 2 things. What about the other aspects of show choir like the set, combo, show concept. Technically you could just throw a show of 5 random songs together and win. This sheet doesn't take in to effect the quality of the show formation and concept.
In the past many Ohio groups have not faired so well in Indiana at ISSMA contests. I know Teays and Findlay have had some upsets in Indiana in the past. Who knows but I hope it is not a long day for the Ohio schools. I hope they can have some major success.

This will be Edgewood's 2nd time out. They are competing @ Danville this weekend.
I hope they shake off the rust and come out strong @ DeKalb and Danville.
Could happen that Edgewood gets in. I know that the last two times Edgewood came up against Carroll they (Edgewood) won by a small margin. Dekalb will be Carroll's thrid time out, but I haven't seen them yet this year...and there is that whole new choreographer thing for them. It will be fun to watch.
Now that I know the judges, I think it will be Carroll or Edgewood in the 5th spot.
haha... " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
I will agree that the ISSMA scoring sheet def. has its quirks but I don't find it non-sensical. I would think that the objectivity is possesses would be a selling point. Haven't we all at some point seen or complained about adjudicators being far too subjective in their scoring. Anyway, just to educate those who aren't aware;

Also, I can say that with this scoresheet, usually the best and most balanced (vocal vs. visual) ensemble at the contest wins, e.g. Carmel at State the last two years. With that said, usually the ensemble who wins the Vocal captions goes on to win the contest. I've only seen one instance where that did not happen. Central Sound Classic last season, Center Grove won Vocals but didn't win GC. However the point spread between them and NC was so close that it didn't really matter who won vocals I guess.
To my knowledge the scoresheet has been revised every year since its inception so changes and improvements have been made and they are continuously on the radar. They're a couple areas on the scoresheet that I'm not so partial to but hey..what can you do. I will say that ISSMA is really good about getting feedback from directors, choreographers, judges, arrangers, etc. on what constitutes a fair score sheet and what areas should be included within the boxes on the sheet. So with my rant over, here are my predicts for Dekalb. I wish I was going
GC-WV..I'm not partial to their show design but they are really a balanced group and seem to compete well. Not to mention that this is like their third contest so they should have a good hold on their set.
1RU- EEE..I love their song selection but I'm not sure if they can beat WV vocally. They should be right in there with visuals though.
2RU BG...they always have a great total package. Not quite sure if they have enough vocally or visually to truly stand out though
3RU-Marysville..I LOVE Marysville but it seems that its taking them a minute to get into the groove of their show AND competition. I would love to see them breakout here with a good result but I will go with the trends
4RU-FC...not usually into their style but they started off strong with the win at South Dearborn. This weekend at Churubusco should be interesting to see if they still have the edge over Center Grove
5RU-Carroll..that's an off pick and under most circumstances I would def. pick Edgewood but the last several years they haven't come out the gate "turning it out". With their first comp. being one containing groups of this caliber it's going to be a tough one for them. So I hope they are ready. Also, Damon Brown groups like Carroll usually come out looking pretty clean which is why I give the edge to them
Just wanted to point out a quick mistake in the above. This year Carroll is not being choreographed by Damon Brown. The mixed group was choreographed by Tara Tober and Mike Weaver. Just wanted to point that out to everyone.
Paul Gulsvig
Kevin Butler
Marty DeMott Shawn Eck
Jeremy Western
Paul and Shawn are two amazing guys. Met Paul at SCA and Shawn has been our choreographer for three years. Amazing guys that will do a fabulous job at judging!
I saw that there were some questions about ticket prices and judges and thought I'd provide the info. I just got an email back from our contest chairman and here are the answers. Anything else, reply or msg me and I'll see what I can do.
Regular Price at Door:
Day $8.00
Night $8.00
All Day/Night $14.00
Judges for the contest are as follows:
Judging the Championship Division:
Paul Gulsvig
Kevin Butler
Marty DeMott
Shawn Eck
Jeremy Western
Judging Varsity Division, Girls, and Middle School:
i'm from buffalo grove and i just want to say that we know how we placed at mt.zion has nothing to do with how people predict our ranks for this competition. its completely different judges and judging in general. no one knows what will happen next weekend. so idk who khoirking is but please disregard his opinion for making us sound stuck up or anything like that. thats not how we are at all.
on that note...haha i cant wait to see everyones shows and good luck to all! Dekalb is always such a fun comp.
Has someone already posted who is judging this contest? If so, I apolgize - please redirect to the right place. But inquiring minds are wondering who is the panel scoring both in the gym AND in the auditorium.
Thanks for the excellent explanation about the ISSMA scoring, it was very helpful!
In reference to one of the groups competing at DeKalb, Buffalo Grove, I wanted to tell you a few things about their trip to the Mt. Zion Invitational. They finished as first runner up (placing ahead of EEE), they had the Grand Champion Female Soloist, Best Crew and also won the coveted "People's Choice Award". They've also got a new posting on Youtube of their performance at Mt. Z, so go there, take it in and you just may move them up a notch or two in your rankings!
"People's Choice Award" is NOT a coveted award.
Tell us who you are "KhoirKing". We know you aren't "Fred Astaire" as your profile says... and if a moderator does an IP search and finds out that you represent the school you brag about, you're going to be feeling pretty lousy when all your classmates find out what a fool you've been on SCC.

Part of the ISSMA score sheet problems are the instructions to the judges. I understand they are told at competitions early in the season that no one should receive any scores in Box 5. No matter that a choir might be full of experienced seniors, have had a productive fall, or just give a terrific performance, ISSMA seems to think no one could be worthy early on.
I think Franklin Central, Buffalo Grove, Eisenhower, and Waubonsie are shoe ins for finals baring anything catastrophic. That leaves 2 open spots. Northrop, Marysville, Edgewood and Carroll are the most likely to fill those spots. Based on the schedule and the judges that have been at Dekalb in the past, I would say Carroll has a good shot and I will guess Marysville. From postings I have read, this will be Edgewood's fist time out and that is always hard. I think that the early time slot and the double performance schedule could hurt Northrop. Just guessing though. They are all good groups and I haven't personally seen any of them yet this year.
Good Luck!
This will be Edgewood's 2nd time out. They are competing @ Danville this weekend.
I hope they shake off the rust and come out strong @ DeKalb and Danville.

You don't even want to know how they score this event... It is the most objective score sheet, with weird points, and it makes no sense
