considering that most socal choirs had a clinic at burbank blast with adjudicators like michelle jenson, and considering it isn't uncommon to see a judge twice in a competition season, how is this any different? a clinician looking for whether you took their advice, or a judge looking to see if you took the critique they gave at the last competition, It's the same idea. Also, I think the skilled adjudicators we have working in our circuit are capable to judge choirs without any bias. Having them as a clinician does allow you to know what their preference is, but I think in general, we know what most of their preferences are just by working with them for so long. Also, the judges are critiquing the best performance not the performance they liked the best preference-wise...so is doesn't matter what kind of cookie is their fave, just who made the best cookie ;)

I'm just kinda mad that REV isn't going to this comp this year.. this is one of my favorite comps through out the year.. reason why were not going.. our chamber choir is going to San Francisco for a competition up there that weekend.. but I will definitely be watching the live feed since im not going with them. In my opinion, and that of many adjudicators, those who work with a group on a regular or part-time basis or even as a one-shot clinician should not adjudicate the group at a competition. If the group does what the clinician suggested they do, or taught them to do, then he or she must score them high to validate what he or she taught or suggested.. If the group doesn't follow through with the suggestions made or the work done during the clinic (or rehearsal), then he or she must score the group low to validate what he or she taught or suggested. Either way, it is not a good thing.
Those who work as clinicians, for the most part, are so locked into believing what they present as the only way to do things that they cannot be open-minded to anything that goes against the grain. Competitions are not clinics. Adjudicators should evaluate how well the group does what they do, not try to change them into something they are not.
Yes thanks for clarifying my post. But Im not speaking particularly about the SOCAL judges, just over the past four years it has seemed a little odd that clinicians who are invited into classrooms to clean or help out in any way would be allowed to judge their sets against others. Does anyone else agree?
Who on this list are you referring to? Michelle Jensen? She critiqued everyone at Burbank BLAST, so that's a wash... I don't believe any of the others have judged any comps locally yet this year, have they?
His post mentioned judges that have acted as clinicians for groups (presumably come into their classes to help develop their sets?), not judges who have previously adjudicated this year. I'm not sure who he is referring to or if there is any accuracy to the claim, however... just clarifying his post.
