AH! I know Kathleen! I met her at SCA! She's sweet. I was so proud of her when she sang "I Know Where I've Been". She did an amazing job!
I just wanted to congratulate everyone who competed at South Jones! It was a great competition with tons of great shows! =) Also, South Jones and Jones On Stage were totally nifty. Great job, guys!
all i can say is...whether you are a good group or a bad group, winning is not everything. i am so very competitive, and i love to win and hate to lose. but thats how any sport or show choir competition is. i think of show choir as a team effort because of the so many in a choir. it does not rest on one person in the choir but everybody. each and every individual has their own special part in that group. its great to win! and it sucks to lose! but if you go on stage, give your best, and know you put on a great show...in my book thats winning enough! as long as you and the group knows that the show you put on for the crowd was great and amazing, everyone should be happy and work hard to make that show even better! i know thats what i try to do and try to help my group do too!
About judging... If you do your show and you can walk off stage and say we did our best, that's all that matters! It does not matter how many judges it is, IT IS JUST THEIR OPINION! NOT THE END OF THE WORLD!!! I'll give you and example. We went to show choir Nationals in Nashville a few years ago. after prelims, 2 judges had us in 1st, 2 had us in 2nd and one judge had us in 5th! We went in to finals in 3rd in stead of 1st. Just her opinion! Judges their own style and way of doing things, you will never get all the judges that like the same thing!
Speaking of old songs... Did anybody notice that not one group this year did YOU CAN'T STOP THE BEAT!!! Yea!!! Lol!!
If your a director and woukd like somebody to come talk to your group to motivate them, email me at: [email protected] and I will be glad to come talk to them!
i loved everyones show, if everyone could get GC, then it would be a better world.
and i think that eveyone placed fairly and everything happened for a reason. and thats
the way that it always will be. i mean this was our first weekend, and i had so much fun.
i guess this is what show choir is really about.
I saw EVERY group on both days and I saw 5 of them twice!! Everybody did a great job!! I have been around show choir for a while and I hjave seen every type of show and every song imaginable!! I have seen groups do the same songs for years with same choreography, but its not just the song or the choreography, but its how you do it! Just because its the same, doesn't mean its boring! Group "A" may do it and you say, hmmm, good. Then Group "B" does it and youe like wow... Greatest thing I ever saw!! its all about what happens on stage!

As for bashing other groups on here... This is NOT the place for it! You wanna discuss it with another person on here, email them.
I will say this... Practice, polish and perform... THEN LEAVE IT ON THE STAGE!! Put all you have into it on the stage, hold nothing back, but leave it there! That's where all this needs to stay!
Good Luck to all and I will be seeing you all soon!
When we were on our way home, there were so many songs running through my head. Songs like "Lost Highway", "Africa", "Let it Ride", "Hit Me Up" and whatever the name of the closer song from NE Jones. I also saw some fantastic outfits! I could go on and on about all the costumes I liked, but I won't.
I saw just about every group Saturday and I thought everyone did well.
The award to most amazing show all the way around has to be Albertville. I had to explain the concept to all my students, but it took me back. Even Dancing Man, because I sang it in high school, with Mike Weaver choreography! Good Luck with it this year!
i agree with mary emma. i liked homewood. i also liked south jones' theme! what a fun set of songs! they showed they had fun too! good job south jones!
MusicMan i do believe you have misinterpretted the statement "the same songs with the exact same choreography". I would imagine that although those other groups have performed the songs before us, our choreography isn't the same. Also, she said the songs had been performed "over and over again for at least the last 10 years". This is the first time for Encore to perform these songs. Yes, Long Beach did A New World, but it isn't the same choreography. Also, you almost forgot the other two songs in our show. As far as Africa goes, has another group started of with a drum solo and guys break dancing? I'm pretty sure we (Encore guys) came up with the idea to get our choreographer to teach us that part. It was originally going to be cut out. I am really tired of all the negativity on these discussions. Please! Lets focus on the positive.
From Your Directors post:
I would MUCH RATHER see a group with original material, a personality, and moves that are entertaining that keep the audience entertained instead of a well-oiled machine. HOW BORING!!!!
"original material and personality" --- I'm pretty certain song selection would fall under this. And i'll say this again, I don't have an issue whatsoever about re - using material. I simply made my post for clarification of statements that were made. Clearly, if original material were the matter, there would be some sort of conflict somewhere in a certain groups show.
And perhaps your director should monitor her snide remarks, and I won't have anything negative to say. You all can say what you wish. I've made my point, and I'm done with it.
haha i didnt even think about it like that. we really do just like the song alot and it fit really well with the concept of our show. there is no arguing here. i'm glad MusicMan is aware other groups have done it cause its a classy song. and as for jones on stage, i LOVED them SOOOO much. and i am telling you stole my heart.
long beach having done it first is our director and she kinda knows what she is doing...

Now, please note that I have NO issue with re - using show music. I feel that songs lend themselves to many different sorts of interpretations, and have a completely different effect overall for a show depending on concept. But I am simply confused. Again I have no issue with re - using music, nor do I intend to disrespect anyone. I’m not a student, and I haven’t been for a while, but with all of this sharp criticism about “canned” choreo or music” I simply question a few statements above regarding show concept and show material. Take a look below. If canned music and choreo are a definite “NO” why are these so apparent in certain 2008 shows. I love all of these songs. and I think that they work well, and I without question use them. But according to above, I guess we could call these “Canned” or "leftovers". Which is rather interesting if we view the show design and concept of a certain group.
