Congratulations to all! There is always a tremendous amount of energy in the room during the awards ceremony, especially when there is a close competition. I don't think cheering is unsportmanship behavior. I think it is because you have so many emotions built up inside. It always hurts to be in second place and you take things out of context. So cheer up and get on with preparing for your next competition.
Very true, but when I was in show choir our director said if we ever knew that we won, still give a nice round of applause for the first runner up, not to go crazy and jump around giving no credit to who is being recognized at the moment. There are several groups who do that VERY well. Off the top of my head CR Kennedy, Linn-Mar and LaCrosse Central have always been great on that. Then again, I wasn't there, so I can't tell what really happened.

Wow, yea. I knew from the beginning Linn-Mar didn't have much of a shot to beat 4th Ave jazz. We aren't nearly as clean or as well prepared. But I was so proud of how we did this weekend. Seriously, comparing where the show was even in : the morning of the competition to our night round performance was a HUGE leap of improvement. I knew we had it in us all the time, we just need to take it upon ourselves to make it happen! 4th Ave Jazz was very good. But I'm super proud to be a part of Tenth Street Edition and I would choose our unique show over the typical show choir formula anyday! Bravo to both 4th Ave. Jazz and Tenth Street Edition!
Well if Iowa City has always been on the "second tier' as you say, wouldn't they know what it was like to get first runner up? Wouldn't they then have common sense to give respect to a show choir that was now in their position?
Nope, stop....no arguements. I could see where this could be going. Point is, bad sportsmanship sucks. Makes the first runner-up feel like crap, and 10th street came from having so many Grand Championships 2 years ago, to 1st runner up the year after that, and so on. But, 10th Street felt like they did their best this weekend, we've come a long way since Onalaska. I just don't want to this to turn into a heated discussion, especially being started from someone from my school, cuz I'm sure for the majority Iowa City High ppl are just awesome, y'all seemed like a fun group! congrats to everyone ok? Zdog37- They were okay. I absolutely hate their show with a passion, but they do it fairly well. They do this wierd pop-rock song (Red Hot Chili Peppers?) as their closer that is neat and upbeat, but also has MAJOR problems with their costumes and props. In all, they're good, but are not overly difficult to beat; just enough to keep you on your toes. I don't know anything about your choirs, but if you're at all good, you'll be fine against them.
(Side note on why I hate their show: their choreographer is Michelle Philgreen, who my prep group had two years ago. She does pretty easy stuff for prep choirs, and my director knew that and specifically told her to teach us stuff closer to varsity-level, because we could handle it, and he wanted to challenge us. She ignored him, and he didn't find out until she'd already taught two songs to us at our camp in the summer. The choreography (in our opinion) was stupid-looking, hilariously simple, sleep-inducingly boring, and impossible to put energy into. She choreographed our opener and closer... We got rid of her and hired a local dance teacher to do our ballad positions and choreograph our 3rd number. Every judge at every competition we went to said that they loved the 2nd and 3rd songs, but had no idea where that level of performance was in the opener and closer. Hmm, coincidence?)
icrocks- NiteLights got 4th in the prep division. They would have gotten 3rd, but apparently got major points off for not having any guys in the group... Um, okay, whatever. That's ridiculous. City Lights took 2nd in the prep division, finishing only 6 points behind Linn-Mar's InStep (who were very good, btw!). In their defense, they were stuck with a one-in-a-million problem: they had no combo. Almost the entire combo is/was also in Jazz Ensemble or Jazz I, and they were at a competition in the morning. They were supposed to get to MP in plenty of time for City Lights, but they won the comp, and Mr. Pringle kept them there for a really long time, and they didn't get to MP anywhere close to City Light's performance. CL had to go on with 4 violins, 2 violas, a string bass, a clarinet, and a french horn. No drummer, no brass. Despite all that, they performed extremely well, and I think they would have beaten InStep if they'd had the full band, but 2nd place is good too.
LilPrice04- Aw, heck yeah! Those people at MP sure know how to work a crowd- 700 show choir kids + dance music=wild, crazy dance party in the gym! Whoo-hoo! That was AWESOME, and I'm going to remember that for a really long time. As for the finals thingie, I'm really, really sorry if you saw it that way. The reason we were cheering was because we honestly thought we were going to get beaten by you, so it was a major suprise. We weren't being cocky or anything, just happy. I think most GC groups do that when 1RU is announced, at least from what I've seen over the years. Again, sorry that you saw it that way.

I would say that 4th Ave has always had an issue with sportsmanship. Probably because untill recently, they have always been on the second tier, not really winning grand champions. So we would always either be dissapointed with a low finish (5th-6th) or overly excited with a high finish (1st-2nd).
So this weekend, when they did really well when they weren't expecting to they got really excited to the extent of coming across as unsportsmanlike. Granted I wasnt really there, but to Linn Mar, I would take it as a complement that 4th Ave was so excited to beat you guys.
And well...4th Ave has a lot to learn from Kennedy.
I also hope that 4th Ave can shake some things up at Urbandale. It will be a lot more interesting now with Onalaska and Davenport North. And Ankeny apparently won a competition this year as well.
Well, this was a fun competition, yay for doing the Cha-Cha-Slide in the gym!!!! It was definitely more exciting for our prep group. The only group I got to see was Iowa City High. I wasn't crazy about their show but they were very clean and had good faces...plus I have a few friends in 4th Ave that I LOVE so I got to see them!! I guess the only thing that I didn't like was when they announced Linn-Mar as first runner up a big section of City High started jumping and cheering for themselves since they knew they won.....wow, completely killed my mood. It was really disappointing that they didn't have better sportsmanship because up until that point, cuz I thought they did. Anyway, great job this weekend everyone!
Lincoln East Swing Choir. They were amazing, absolutely jawdropping. They are 4A, but only have 14 performers and 3 band members, and don't use risers. They did some theme about time, but all of their songs were fantastic. Their choreography and vocals are not terribly complicated, but look and sound great and are ungodly clean. They make very good use of props, too. I love them!
