If I'm following what has been alleged correctly, there appears to be two issues:

1) Did actually 4 judges have Burroughs in first place, 2 judges have NC in first and 0 have Clinton, or did indeed 3 have Burroughs, 2 NC and 1 Clinton, just not the judges as reported?

2) Was the method of tabulation switched; i.e. using only raw scores and not converting scores into rankings? If so, when, why and by whom?

THANKS A TON!!! ...but the ballad and the last two numbers won't play. YouTube says that they are unavailable.

I posted the links right after I uploaded, so they may not have been fully ready to watch... as youtube has to catalog their videos... not sure what that process is, but I think the videos are working now... at least to the best of my knowledge.

Sorry about that.

I find this response interesting in that Mr. Brown makes it quite clear that he has little to no clue as to how the final placements were prepared. It seems silly to me that one would broadly defend every aspect of a competition like FAME Chicago without having personal knowledge of a process such as preparation of final placements. Additionally, the apparent inconsistency in scoring had absolutely nothing to do with the qualifications or sense of fairness of any of the judges. I don't question the briefing he claims the judges received, nor do I question the personal credentials or biases of the judges. What I question is any decision by FAME Events to switch the method of scoring during the competition.

As for the bolded portion of Mr. Brown's post, I do take issue with his characterization of me as "irresponsible." It is true that I "[don't] know the quality of people that run these events," but I don't feel I must make acquaintance with the organizers of FAME Chicago in order to raise objection with a slight. I think it is the opposite of irresponsible to bring attention to ethical concerns, especially when the participating choirs at FAME Chicago have payed a large sum to compete in what they probably felt was an equitable setting. It also does not seem irresponsible to me when other issues begin to surface; if Andrew Drinkall did not rank Clinton in first place, why was he listed as doing such? My hope in bringing attention to the scoring discrepancy is that each choir receives their appropriate due. There are no vindictive intentions in what I post here.

My issue is with the insinuation that decisions are potentially influenced by reputation or "who paid how much". I trust and know the quality of these people, have faith in them and their fairness and believe it's irresponsible to question their intentions without knowing them or doing extremely intense investigation.

Am I saying I understand the computation method or think it's without the possibility of flaw, no. This is why I made that clear in my post. I simply believe the tone of the post was accusatory rather than simply questioning. I've judged about 7 or 8 FAME events, and have never experienced anything other than a complete and total stressing of fairness and equity among the judges and how FAME instructs us to comport ourselves while representing them.

I won't comment further, but just want it to be made clear the extent to which I believe in the fair intentions, without bias, of this company. I don't claim that I, they, or anybody is perfect. Simply that the insinuation of ethical questions is a big, and I believe unfair, leap. God Bless

That happened at FAME Hawaii (kinda) too. Valley recieved Best Vocals and Chula Vista got best diction, while our diction score was higher than Chula's. I might be wrong, but i'm pretty sure Vocals and Choreography are based on points, while all the other awards are based on who the judges vote on.

Just as a side note, I find it interesting that Burroughs didn't get any captions that pertained to the vocal performance of a choir in general (Best Diction/Best Male Sound/Best Female Sound), but still managed to pull out Best Vocals. If FAME does points, what were the point totals after all was said and done?

Omg! i'm just glad the discrepancy was NOT for the grand championship of the competition! that would have been CRAZY! nevertheless, it is an issue that must be solved!

I was one of the judges last evening, and first of all, it was the single toughest finals I've judged in the 2 decades I've been judging! Stunning shows, incredible vocals, amazing intensity and multiple groups that are champions in every conceivable sense of the word.

I want to briefly address the person who speculated that something "fishy" was going on. For the record, I've NEVER adjudicated a competition before where there was a stronger emphasis on fairness, equity and integrity on the part of the judges. We received a briefing Friday night at dinner where we were told under NO circumstances were we to discuss our opinions on any show during the day with each other. We were not allowed to see the afternoon prelim results for fear that it could shade our opinion of the finals. All we were given was the order of appearance in the finals. We were told we could talk ONLY about captions (repetoire, soloists, original selection, etc) and NOTHING ELSE as it pertained to the competition. While this was a panel of veteran judges who all have integrity and would've judged fairly and independantly anyway, it was wonderful to see how careful FAME was (in particular Chad Alexander) in making sure decisions were made with total and complete fairness.

People much smarter than me do all the mathematical computations when it comes to the ideas of raw scores, rankings, conversions, percentages of weighting in captions, tie breakers, etc. I don't pretend to have any grasp at all on how these computations are programmed and determined. I do, however, know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that it is all done with a commitment to fairness and of trying to do what's right by each and every school that attends each and every FAME competition. Any insinuation that consideration is given to who a school is in determining rankings is an irresponsible allegation made by somebody who obviously doesn't know the quality of people that run these events.

On a cheerier note, it was nice to be able to give a quick high-five to Jorge before entering the contest, as we'd never met before. It was a day to remember, because of the extreme excellence of those who performed and the brilliant shows that were designed and executed by some of the nation's top high school entertainers. It was my honor to be a part of it, and everybody needs to understand that both the FAME staff and every single judge took their jobs to be totally fair seriously.
God Bless, Damon Brown

I gotta say that after I watched North Central's show online, I liked the first half of the show, but after the ballad, I did not like their show one single bit. Sorry and I know that it isn't as good online as it is in person, but I just didn't enjoy it period. O Fortuna, Please Don't Stop The Music, and Flying Home were all great, but after that was bland and disorganized.

He is saying that Clinton did not receive any "1st Place" ranks from any of the judges.

Wait, so does this mean that ... Clinton had no first place rankings? Or does it just mean that there was a mistake in listing the judges who ranked Clinton/Burroughs first?

Terrific question

wow
as everyone has said before me, what an amazing competition!
group after group, I was impressed. There was not a dull moment at this competition.
and not to mention all the amazing and wonderful people that I got to meet!
I couldn't help but laugh when we all were introducing ourselves as our scc names, two too funny ;)
To all performers that I got to talk to through out the day, amazing job! Yesterday would not have been so great if it wasn't for your dedication to show choir and performing!
It was great getting to meet SO many performers from other groups across the nation. Hopefully alot of them are on here so we can all keep in touch!

all in all, yesterday was an amazing day!
congrats to everyone!

The wonderful solo is from Christina Aguilera's "Welcome", while the meat of the song is Michael Jackson's "The Greatest Show on Earth."

Great! THANKS ALOT!

so i need to clarify that my director andrew drinkall did not have clinton in first. If you look at point totals he has burroughs in first with clinton in second by a point and somehow things got mixed up in the counting and it gave clinton a one ranking instead of burroughs. Just clearing that up...

I am home and just recovered from a WONDERFUL show choir competition.

First of all, all the groups were amazing, not one bad performance. I am madly in love with John Burroughs. From your show to the kids to the PARENTS! I met a few of your parents and they were so kind and one even was so kind to nab me a wind spinny thing. Congrats on the win as it was well deserved!

Clinton- WOW. I really did like the show. I met a few of the girls from your group and they were so nice and knew how to handle themselves. This is the first time I've gotten to see you live since Benton in 04. Sharp everything.

North Central- I loved loved loved the show. Your second song was great, i loved the soloist and her outfit. the main "complaint" is that the show just was very choppy and to me didn't flow as well as the other shows. oh and your ballad soloist deserved the standing ovation given. She was... jaw dropping.

Waubonsie Valley- Second year in a row i've gotten to see you, and I LOVED it. You guys are getting so good for only being in existance for such a short time. Amazing ballad and soloist. great energy. And i was afraid i wasn't going to be a fan of the Polka song, but i did, very much.

South Jones- I was suprised by you guys. I didn't know what to expect, and you looked like you guys were having a lot of fun on stage. I loved Welcome To The Jungle and the closer costumes and shoes

John Burroughs Girls- Not a fan of girl groups normally, but i loved the show. you girls sounded amazing. good job making finals.

And the second best part of this competition was meeting so many people: Haakon, Aaron, Mr. Fehr, Kendra and the list goes on. I had a few parents say hi to me who knew me off SCC, that was fun (Hi PARENTS!!!!).

Well worth every penny i spent.

OH and there is a Burroughs parents who took a picture of me with my Wind Spinny Thing (I don't know the proper term...) if you're on SCC or one of you kids can find a parent with it and it get it to me, that would be great
Good job Burroughs on a well deserved win!
