Where does Dennis Hendrickson teach? I've heard his name before, but I don't know where he's from.

Congrats Urbandale! You must have stepped it up at night (I didn't get to see you in finals), but I really enjoyed your day show. Tough competitors as you always have been.

Congrats also to Xavier. That's the first time I've seen your group in a couple years, and I was very impressed.

Thank you to Waukee as well! Back when I was still in show choir (2002), we did you second number. It was so much fun to get to sit back and watch that be performed. Also, a huge thank you for running a competition almost completly on time all day long.

Oh you did Ballin the Jack

There were two girls (so happy they were crying)and a guy from Urbandale who came to talk to Cam and me. They were so nice! Sadly, we didn't get their names. If anyone would possibly know or can find out.. let us know!

Urbandale-you guys did a great job! I was excited to see you since I haven't seen you guys for a few years. Was this your last comp?

All other groups- great job! I didn't see many since I was extremely tired after our two shows... but I heard everyone did well!

I have a question someone might know the answer to...

Originally, finals performance order was announced as follows: GCS, Papillion, Studio 2007, West Des Moines, Vitality, Xhilaration. However, very soon afterwards a revised schedule was issued: GCS, Vitality, Papillion, West Des Moines, Studio 2007, Xhilaration.

Anyone know why this happened? I'm very curious. Congrats to GCS and Urbandale! Also, best soloist captions:

Female: ____ Weaver - Urbandale "Studio 2007"
Male: Justin Zaugg - Xavier "Xhilaration"

Can someone tell me if Justin Zaugg's parents are Steve and Christine? If so, they were in my mother's (Wendy Haight of Johnston Synergy) very first "swing" choir in Norway, Iowa 30 years ago.

I looked around at night and didn't see a camera. The only camera there was during the day. There weren't programs either, and no table to order videos at all.

We got DVDs of our daytime performances, but the sound quality was a little iffy since it was through the mixing board. It sounded nothing like it did live.

Who were the judges?

Doran Johnson
Gary Fiscus
Dina Else
Pam Mum
Dennis Hendrickson
Arla Clausen

I don't know if those are all spelled correctly but that's who they were. Dennis Hendrickson was judging the middle schools during the day rounds but he came over to the high school competition for finals. Pam Mum was supposed to go to the MS competition for finals but they started the finals before she got there.

I would like to extend a thank you to all the Waukee parents, students, and staff for making this a smoothly-run competition (for the most part). It didn't seem like we got behind schedule at all which was nice.

Congratulations to Urbandale. You guys are a great group. Even though we were ahead of you in the day rounds by a significant amount, you came back to take it and that shows you have heart and the will to succeed. Congratulations on your win. It was an honor to compete against you one last time in my high school career. I was looking at the history between Urbandale and GCS last night since I've been in GCS...it turns out we have this pattern going. At Onalaska 2004, we placed higher than you. At Big Dance the following year, you placed ahead of us. Then at Big Dance last year, we placed ahead of you. And of course, this year...you placed ahead of us taking 1st and us taking 2nd. I guess we can call ourselves even now??

Congratulations to all groups who competed yesterday and last night.

In the original order that was drawn our groups had only one choir between them. That wouldn't have worked at all since we would have had to leave the stage and basically go straight to warmup for our second performance. Both our groups have essentially the same instrumentalists in the backup combo who were about to play their third and fourth shows of the day. Since Studio's show is more taxing for the brass players we asked if it was okay to have Vitality take the earlier slot and Studio the later slot.

I'm not sure if you're inferring that something unfair or unethical took place, but I don't believe there was anything in the rules that covered what happened if two groups from the same school were selected to participate in finals so we just asked if we could do what worked best for both our groups. I've been to many invitationals over the years when the same thing has happened and it's pretty much standard practice for the varsity to take the later time unless the rules prohibit it.

OK, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up. It just seemed odd that a performance order was drawn, and was then changed more than it seemed, at the time, like it needed to be. I was really just curious - in no way was I "inferring that something unfair or unethical took place".

Once again (can't say this enough), congrats to Studio. I am sad I didn't get to see your show all season long

Hmm... I thought of that, but it still wouldn't explain why they would trade Vitality and Studio. " border="0" alt="unsure.gif" /> I'd appreciate clarification from anyone who knows. Again, congrats to Studio!

We asked the Waukee staff if we could switch and they said yes. If they had said no we would have abided by their decision.

I want to mention how honored Urbandale was to be selected as GC at Waukee. All of the groups that particpated in finals last night were excellent groups. I of course didn't really get to see any of the finalists since I was busy with our groups, but our parents told me that everyone gave a stellar performance at night. They were especially impressed with the improvement they saw in Valley's show since Johnston's invite.

(Bonus: I got to spend a few minutes chatting with Adam Miller before Studio's prelim performance and after finals.)

Edit: To compensate for my poor typing skills.

Last weekend Urbandale switched their finals order because they had two groups (prep and varsity), so the band, and crew, and logistics wouldn't work out. Guessing it's the same thing.
