Not very often anymore that I come across anything in show choir that I haven't seen at least in some form or another before. Hart's "screens" last night were a rare treat. I hope someone posts a clip on YouTube soon because it's rather hard to explain unless you were there. Simple, yet used to great effect.
Oh.....and one more thing....thank God Chula is doing Shadowlands......what with Burroughs taking it out of their show....I was afraid we were gonna be down to just two groups doing it....but now we're back up to three again.
Now if only we could convince Carroll that all his show needs is a little Shadowlands....we'd really be in business.
We could even have a Shadowlands Competition this year, where only groups performing Shadowlands could come.
all jokes aside though....the soloist from Chula's shadowlands was very good AND we're all gonna miss Agina from Burroughs doing it because she brought the house down with it at Aztec.
oh what a night. " border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> very exciting!
Serrano: you guys never fail to entertain me. I love the whole monsters theme really unique.
Diamond Bar/Los Alamitos: I didn't get to see what you guys did cause I was still loading stuff on our bus :< but I'm sure you guys did swell.
Hart: very good performance you guys looked massive! good sound & dance. the moving backdrops were really cool as well. like a giant magic trick! congrats on that very creative idea.
Burbank: you left me speechless. your acapella was so amazing. such energy and vocal power! I LOVE BURBANK! all of your numbers were like closers! I was blown away by your performance. the choreography was so clean and so sharp! I can't wait to see it again! my favorite is the boys song and aquarius.
Burroughs: i love the trees. its so burroughs. great improvement from aztec sing. not once did i ever take my eyes off of you guys. the journey closer was amazing, it was like being at a real rock show! loved every second of it.
Hart- good stuff, i really like the girls dresses and the moving black screens were one of the coolest things i've ever seen!
Burbank-wowww, totally blew me awayyy! i really admire the energy you guys still had even in the last song...that was just so amazing. what a great performance! you guys truly deserved first place
good job owning last night!
Burroughs- ahh, so disappointed we were in the warmup room when you guys were performing
but im really looking forward to seeing you guys at Diamond Bar! heard a lot of great things (trees, lights? lol)
and Good Job to everyone! Brea Competition was a whole level higher than at Aztec, everyone really stepped it up! and of course....looking forward to Diamond Bar xD
Burbank,...FANTASTIC JOB!! Way to raise your game this week and come home with the win! It was awesome as usual to work with you guys last week for a couple days, and I thought we made some great progress on Africa and 60's. KEEP IT UP!!
By the way, as I'm writing this, the temperature in Indianapolis is 8 degrees with a 25 mph wind, making the wind chill somewhere in the neighborhood of -10 farenheit!! Pack your ski parkas for Frankln Central! God Bless, Damon Brown
great job everyone last night was super fun to watch i really enjoyed myself
i loved our diamond bar seat buddies haha woo keep the good work up im excited for next friday
First off, I have to say last night was ****ING AMAZING. I mean, wow.
Chula Vista: First thing I have to say: robbed. Personally, I thought you guys would place first easy. When you guys came out, my friend turned to me when you started performing and said "Wow, the first show choir of the night!" and it was completely true. While the other choirs had been nice, that was just it. Nice. Nothing special, no real memorable sets (except I kinda remember who won first place in Division A, though not the school's name), but then you came and busted out with this bright, bright energy that really took off. Your vocals were good too; I could understand the words easily (good diction!) and OMG the girl who sang Shadowland was easily my favorite soloist of the night. And I'm even forsaking my own choir in favor of her. Holy ****ing cow. Girl's got pipes.
Burroughs: You guys are always so flashy. It's SO great. Last year's snake is yet to be topped, but trees and weird light columns almost did it. " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The trees in the opener got me kinda distracted at first (stilts? boxes? wtf?) but I started watching you guys and I have to admit, you sounded good and you looked good, but you weren't as sharp as I would have really liked. Also, at first, it was kind of hard to understand what you were singing; it was beautiful to listen to, but you guys needed to punch your words out. It was all a bit too smooth and tended to blend together. It is early in the year though, so that's good. " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The a capella was BEAUTIFUL and everything was really nice. LOVE THE LIGHTS. HOLY ****.
Burbank: Holy ****ing cow. Chills much? Soloist on Africa was great, and I loved the animal noises (am I the only person who noticed that?). AND OMG, YOU GUYS SCARED THE CRAP OUT OF ME. Did anyone else notice that their stage right bottom riser had fallen out? HOLY **** TALK ABOUT INJURY POSSIBILITY. But I guess your techies thought fast, becase someone stuffed a box underneath it and you guys kept right on dancing. Amazing. Your voices were powerful, SO MATURE, and energized. And the Seventies set-- the guy who had his shirt unbuttoned in the front? Hot. " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> The closer, the Evanescence song... WAS ****ING WOW. The break-down at the end was fantastic. I love how you used the tappers to emphasize certain parts of the music; simply wow. This is the first time I've seen your set, and I have to say I am SO far from disappointed. Easily first place in my eyes. You really took the bar and raised it to an unbeatable level at this time of year. Keep progressing at your rate, and there's no doubt who will be the best show choir this year.
Arcadia: Some of your stuff was really cool (love the stuff you did with the arms!), but all of it really lacked a certain energy. Look at Burroughs, Burbank, and Chula for what I'm speaking about-- they may not have the perfect intonation you guys are hailed for, but they sound significantly older and have great energy to their voices. I think it's more of a thing to punch your words? Energize your sound? Otherwise, I've yet to understand the hype about this choir, to be honest. Besides from my way-too-high standards, I thought this was a pretty cool choir. Like I said, significantly quieter than Burroughs and Burbank and Chula, less energized, but the music was very pretty and nice. If I had to sum up your choir, it'd be this: nice. Give more attitude to the audience! It might be because of your set (the songs are more classic and show choir-y than those contemporary hooligans at Burbank and Burroughs), but making your voices sound older and energizing your sound would help immensely. Same with the dancing.
Glendora "Royal Stewarts" - First Place
Rowland "Infusion" - Second Place
Mark Keppel "Aztec Singers" - Third Place
Serrano "Vocal Pointe" - Fourth Place
Good grief... 4:42am and I just walked in the door! *yawn*
I had a BLAST tonight... everyone improved SO much from Aztec and it was unbelievably awesome to see so many good friends (and meet many new ones!) tonight. Taylor, Joel, Eddie, Eli, Sean, Dylan, Christian, Woody, Keaton... you all rock my socks even if ya don't know it. Orbs, where the heck were you? " border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> Haha, I'll catch you at Showcase next week fo sho...
My BV brothers know I love them, but I just wanted to say that it's awesome to have such great friends to make the trek to Citrus with. These things wouldn't be the same without you.
I can't wait to see how everyone continues to grow and develop throughout the year. Next week: back-to-back madness!
Pictures and fun to come for everyone I managed to snap a pic of; I'm not even going to try to comment on individual choirs at this hour but everyone was fantastic. Seriously really great.
I thought the Brea festival was amazing. Definetly unforgettable. There were crazy good shows out there last night that blew me away.
BURBANK- I love you guys. I luv the song Africa, and when u guys walk in like a circle *whats it gonna take *Africa, way cool. Then the Aquarius song, luv the choreography (actually in every song), and omg your closer was phenomenol <(is that spelled right? " border="0" alt="blink.gif" /> haha) I was in a trance when you guys did that stomp tap stuff, it was crazy good. YOU GUYS WERE AMAZING!
BURROUGHS- Things i remember, the trees were so cool, added so much to the song. I Luv Do You KNow Him, man those lights were insane, great effects. And in your closer I felt like I was at a real Rock Concert. Did i see tattoos on your arms, that was crazy. haha Great energetic Show. My heart was beating crazy fast during your set.
HART- I realy liked your suits and dresses. and those sliding door things were amazing, probably the best visual effect, and when all the girls left at the end i was all WoW! You had a Great entertaining set and i enjoyed it.
To everyone else, you definetly took it up a notch since Aztec Sing and were all great!

Burbank and Burroughs.....wow......got to give it up to both of you....but Burbank did win this round. Your Africa was so much better tonight....and your closer....holy crap.....had to be everyones favorite.
Burroughs....the trees are so amazing....they reminded me of street performers in Waikiki......such innovative stuff.....haha...and the tattoo sleeves were pretty cool too.
Los Al....great acapella you guys. Very well done.
