Sioux Falls O'Gorman Ovation! has been added to the schedule. There is an e-mail going out to all directors. Please have your directors check their spam/junk mailbox as for some reason my e-mails tend to end up there... Here's how the new schedule works:

Same as above but insert O'Gorman immediately following Hinton. All of the 3A & 4A groups will compete 1 time slot LATER than originally listed. The Exhibition performance by Pinnacle will be at 6:05 with daytime awards announced at 6:30. This is turning out to be another exciting year for show choir at Bishop Heelan. I can't wait for next weekend!!

Mr. Storm,
Thank you so much for working us in! We are all very excited to come!

Pretty sure Mitchell is taking a car load or two down to watch this competition! It's over our spring break, what's better than a spring break of show choir?

Can't wait to see everyone and their shows! Best of luck!

that would be amazing!

So it is now like 99% sure that O'Gorman Ovation! will also be coming to Heelan -- We begged our director to let us go since we were unable to go to Sioux City East today. She is going to be in Miami for the National ACDA Convention, but we are now most likely going to be coming without her. We are all very excited, because Heelan is like always our favorite competition.

The judging for the daytime works on a points system. All of the different classes are based on school size and there will be a winner for each individual class. The groups, with the exception of junior high, are conteders for finals. The top six scoring groups will perform in finals.

The finals scoring is also based on a points system. After each of the judges has scored all six groups, their points are transferred into the olympic ordinal scoring system which ranks the groups and a winner will be chosen based on popular opinion. With the ordinals, no one judge can sway the final result by stacking their points for a group, or against another group.

My Predictions:
GC Bloomington Kennedy
1st RU Papillion
2nd RU Lewis Central
3rd RU Millard West
4th RU Gretna
5th RU Westwood

I've seen Bloomington, Papio, and a video of MW this year, and the other groups I've seen in past seasons. Looks like a pretty good comp!

hmmm...i agree mostly...but i think Gretna might place a little higher...they have been good in the past....and as much as i dont like Kennedy's show, it is strong and full of energy....

Good Luck Papio!!!!!

I'm confused as to how the judging and placement work at this competition. So many different classes ... Single-Gender, 1A... 4A? Anyone care to explain? It would be greatly appreciated.

Kudo's!! Here's an additional thought that might help....there's a reason why a "team" of judges are used. Each judge brings to the table a different perspective. A general rule of thumb that will NEVER fail a group (or the director) is, "if in doubt, don't". If something in your show caused two judges to have a similar negative reaction, it's probably something that should have been modified or toned down. For that, I hold every director responsible.
There's also a bit of history involved...a few years back, choreography trends were getting pretty "loose". It got to the point where the judging became fairly harsh on some groups, due to some of the moves on stage. Fun is good, but there's a line that needs to be protected in terms of appropriateness.
Just a few thoughts....

Let me explain my fast-talking friend here...

I don't know if any of you saw our show last year but it was pretty good. Not GC material mind you but at least one for the finals. We arrived down in Sioux City the night before, had a ROCKIN' good time at this crappy little hotel and were pumped for the comp. I perosnally loved the setup and the food there I remember was pretty darn good! :-D Then comes perfoming...we did the show and did it GREAT and we were all heading back to talk to the judge in quite a funk. Best time ever?! Maybe...Well, the judge (can't remember who it was) said we were one of his favorite groups there and that we were practically guarenteed finals! Well, in short...no finals...Later on, we found out that 2 of the judges (again, unable to remember who!) had marked us INCREDIBLY low, and I mean low...down in the dirt low, for our comedy number. Their remarks included the "appropriateness" of certain things going on and whether or not they were family friendly. Well...the long and short of it is, our director was freakin' out! And so ends the tragedy that was Bishop Heelan '06...:-(

Sometimes that happens. You just got to go with the flow. Mitchell placed very high at Onalaska then didn't make finals at Omaha. Judges see different things, and I guess that was the situation in both Mitchell's and your case. Whatever may happen you just have to know that if you rocked that stage as hard as you could have then you actually won within yourself... (wow, sappy, I should write novels).
