People are really underestimating West Des Moines Valley and Lincoln Southwest. I think a lot of you will be surprised!

haha... too bad we, and lincoln both cancelled because of the flipping storm.

Hey I was just wondering if anyone could let me know what Urbandale's show is this year. I'm going to Waukee next week to see them and I've heard a lot of good things about them but not what their show is. Congrats to everyone!

Our show this year is:

"Superhero"
"Healing Rain/I Can Only Imagine"
"Hurt"
"90 Degrees and Freezing"
"I've Got the Music In Me/Dancin' in the Streets"

Because our groups performed so close together in both the prelims and the finals I only got to watch Totino's exhibition performance, so I can't render any opinions on other choirs or the outcome. Totino was great like always. Your show is so unique this year with "Snuff That Girl" and "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens". I loved the cute character voices on that one. And the soloist on "Raise the Roof"....WOW. All of our hosts were once again...well...spectacular. TG puts on a great competition and we are very glad we made the long trek up there yesterday.

(Ana...I still want to meet Binkie Binkerson one of these days.)

Hello,

I haven't been on these forums, since I was in Vitality, about two years ago - so cut me a little slack. Yes, I was very impressed how this show choir competition at Totino was run. It was probably the best one I have been to in a while (well, since last year (I look forward to going there every year)). The prices of the food were very reasonably, the staff was very down-to-earth when it came to hosting. I know how much time is spent at setting up a show choir competition, and then especially tearing down. The only thing I was very displeased was how Bemidji recieved their award. When Urbandale's placement was announced, I looked over and noticed that they were cheering. It felt like they didn't give any respect to our group, and I found that very rude. It should be considered an honor even to be accepted to perform in the finals. If the world was perfect, we would all cheer for each other. Again, Totino did a phenomenal job hosting this competition, and if I weren't a senior, I'd love to perform there again.

Thank Your Very Much,

S JM

ok, quickly,

i was meaning to ask these two groups this question for a LONG time, but i always keep forgetting, maybe someone can answer...

hastings - how did you guys come up with the banana cheer?

bemidji - what does the "O" mean in your cheer-type thing?

just wanted to know, i was so curious last night especially...
p.s. me and four others (moh-reen, becca, hannah, wes) were the ones who decorated the vocal warm up room!!! just thought that would be an interesting bit of trivia from the 2007 spectacular...

" border="0" alt="laugh.gif" />
I may have grabbed one of the snakes and stuck it in my fly during the vocal warmup and show runthrough...And I kept it. I hope you don't mind. I named him "The Little General."
;)

But it's sweet, I move my hips side to side, and he slithers back and forth.
Immature? Maybe
In poor taste? Maybe
Funny? I sure think so

The bananas cheer - jeez I have NO idea.

What a great competition!!!!!! It was a blast. I didn't get to see many groups because I was hosting but good job to everyone. Now for a couple thoughts.

Vitality- I was one of your hosts. I was blown away by your performance. You guys made me smile the whole time you were there. I loved your ballad, I can't remember the name though. I loved how you guys staged it. The energy you bring to your show is amazing!!!!!!!!!! I love the beginning of your show when you guys put your heads up and sing and explode out on to the rest of the stage. It was AMAZING. You should be so proud of your performance and congrats on getting 5th in finals and 1st in prep division. I knew you guys would do well. Thank you for helping take down the room, that was really nice.

Urbandale Studio- Holy Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was the first time I got to see your guys show this year and it was jaw dropping and eye popping. You are so clean and your vocals are... (I can't think of any word that is appropriate to use). OMG!!!!!!!!! I was so excited about your guys show. Taylor your solo was wonderful. Congrats on best female solo. Scott, WOW! I love your voice!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on best male solo. You all did awesome and you're all really nice and polite to us. I met some people that I hope to see next year. And thank you for helping take down the room. That was really nice of you. I hope to see you guys at some competitions next year. And I hope you guys come back to Spectacular next year. (I want to host you but it's too early to think about that) Good luck in Florida!!!!!!!!!!

Mr. Woodin, Ms. Morris, and Mr. Temple-You guys were amazing. You made this day a blast for us. You have two amazing groups. Good luck in Florida.

Everyone at Spectacular did a great job. I hope to see you all next year.
YAY on the ribbons. That's awesome!!!!!!!

Thank you to everyone who made it up here yesterday! I don't think anyone has said it on this forum yet; we raised over $1500 just by selling those ribbons! Thank you to everyone who donated money because this is truly what show choir is about. Great job to everyone yesterday!

Bloomington Jefferson - Your show is like a whole new show from when I saw you at Winterfest. I like the different ballad. Great facials throughout, I really enjoy watching. Bryce owns the stage on his solo. I liked the show today a lot more than a month ago.

Also, I feel more points should be allotted to vocals. This is my personal opinion, but I feel like Urbandale was just at a different level overall than any of the other groups.

from going to competitions in iowa, and other states- it seems as though Iowa usually emphasizes vocals a bit more, whether that be in scoring or placement. I know when Inno went to Wisconsin the critiquer didnt like the way they were singing all the songs differently, and instead wanted them to be more pop/edgy.

It's cool to be able to just cross a border and have everybodys styles/opinions change on what a show choir should look/sound like.

Urbandale, SOOOO CLOSE!!!!! I know you put everything you had into the night show, so what more could Mr Woodin, Jeff and I ask of you? Fire up for next week, it's a big one!

Waconia, you need to rally yourselves and not get swallowed up in disappointment. Mr Olsen and I think you've been GREAT this year and have nothing but pride for you, so chins up! God Bless, Damon Brown

Bemidji-
WOW!!!!! Not only were you giving me laughs all day inside the Jungle, but you blew me away during your finals preformance. Sometimes I get bored of show choir and just want to sleep. Your show...NOT POSSIBLE! Everything you do has an intensity to it, showing you clearly are loving every second on stage. You are such nice people and are really funny. I'll definitely have to come and stop by Spectacular as a specator next year. Way to go!!!!!!!!!

Wow, what a surprising competition!! I wish my SCC clan and I could have stayed for finals but we were all extremely tired. Plus we figured basing off of day round performances that Urbandale had this one. Bemidji must have really stepped up in finals. I wish I could have seen that. But anyway, congratulations to all group especially Bemidji!!

To Urbandale:

I look forward to seeing you guys next Saturday at Waukee. Your show is so fun and so well-manicured (do you like that adjective because I sure do). I'm looking forward to seeing your show in a week. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Woodin this weekend at Totino and he is quite the funny man. He recognized me!!! I felt famous for 2 seconds. Anyways, I'll see you all at Waukee .

To the rest of the Totino-Grace participants, I had a lot of fun and thank you very much, particularly Jane, Megan, Ana, and Tom for being so fun It sucks that so many groups pulled out but you made the best out of the situation and that's all that matters! Thanks again!

This was the most fun spectacular I have ever been around to see. Even though we had seven groups drop out, it was still close to the very end with excellent results. If you had not heard, the scoring was done from rankings.
Bemidji: 1,1,2,2
Urbandale: 2,2,1,1,

Since it was a tie, it went to raw score. Bemidji won by ONE point. I knew it was going to be close, but seriously one point? WOW!

Urbandale-
Since your finals preformance was right before ours, I did not get to see your group perform. My mom told me it was top notch as always. Congradulations on an amazing show and season: you guys rock my socks!

Hastings-
I've said it before and I'll say it again: "With or without you" is my favorite song all year. Your whole group is filled with incredible preformers.I'm so glad you came this year, and hopefully you come again next year as well!

Waconia- Once again, I could not see you because of your order (we were in vocal warm-up). Tara told me you left it all out there! Keep your hopes up and work hard!

Bemidji-
WOW!!!!! Not only were you giving me laughs all day inside the Jungle, but you blew me away during your finals preformance. Sometimes I get bored of show choir and just want to sleep. Allright, I watched almost all the choirs I could, so I kind of got choir-blur, but this is what I remember-

Jefferson Jive - I was very impressed by your show. You have very sophisticated choreography, and everyone seemed engaged. A lot of great dancers, clean choreography, and I liked the vocals.

Urbandale Vitality - Best prep I've ever seen. So clean. Cool choreography too, I really like your show. Honestly, your vocals at times were a little lacking, and those "hole's" were the only moments when I remembered you were a prep group. Just a little more robust, full voiced some times.

Bloomington Jefferson - Your show is like a whole new show from when I saw you at Winterfest. I like the different ballad. Great facials throughout, I really enjoy watching. Bryce owns the stage on his solo. I liked the show today a lot more than a month ago.

Waconia - I thought you guys should have beat Vitality, I liked your show a lot, I enjoyed the Kids novelty, although that diction didn't get across. The girls from Hastings are in love with your dresses.

Bemidji - Wow. April James gave you guys one great show! And your choreo is so tight and clean, it's fantastic. It's hard to compare to GCS, but one of you two have the best choreography of the year by far. Opener - gosh that circle choreo is so cool. Your band kicks ASS. The trumpet plays some mean auxilary percussion, and your trombonist is fantastic. Second song - it's definetly growing on me every time I see it. It's a nice change of pace. I like the "Shy self affirmative" smile your soloist gives before she turns around at the end of her solo, it's very endearing. Your ballad, personally I didn't really feel it. I didn't feel it was that full. Baricuda - That crouch/punch down move is SWEET. It's so powerful, you pop it like it's hot, and with your facials, it's the second best part of the show for me behind the opener. Up the Ladder to the Roof - I don't like that kind of show design, I feel it loses steam. Eye of the Tiger - I feel like the guys get showed up by the girls to be honest. The closer - Oh man! What a great show choir closer! Starting piano is great, and there's all that intensity. It just keeps growing too. Great closer.
Overall - The most intense choir I've seen this year. It feels like the show is built around the dance breaks, which are the best dance breaks I've seen this year. Everything is just SO crisp, and so popped. Everyone too, not just the front row. However, personally I feel like the vocals take second fiddle to the great show and choreo.

Urbandale - Either you or GCS are the best choirs I've seen this year. The biggest thing is how MUSICAL you guys are. From the very first forte-piano, you have such great phrasing and dynamics. It just reminds me of a quote I've heard, "If you shout, people will hear you. If you whisper, people will listen." I've never heard a choir sing a) Quite so OFTEN and SO quiet. Your ballad is the most jawdropping piece I've ever heard in a competition. The soloist is phenomenal. The whole choir is just so comitted to everything they sing. Choreo - I love the stuff you do. Damon Brown really knows how to utilize the whole stage, especially in that second song with all of the different sectors doing their own thing. The closer - those are normally 2 songs I hate, but the arrangements are great. I love the little "Everybody dance now"s and "Don't you wish your choir was hot like me" - that's sheer brilliance.

Overall on the results - I disagreed. I felt Urbandale's vocals were phenomenal, and so was Bemidji's choreography, but Urbndale's choreo was much better than Bemidji's vocals. Also, I feel more points should be allotted to vocals. This is my personal opinion, but I feel like Urbandale was just at a different level overall than any of the other groups.

Totino, if you ever really wonder who loves you, the answer is Hastings. And everyone else in that auditorium, because you guys had a great performance, it was tons of fun, and was espcecially cool at the end when you guys went right up to the audience.

I'm glad we won the spirit award " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> that's the first time we've won one. I feel like we might have pissed some people off but... I really enjoyed it. I suppose I'm kind of the demagogue responsible for them. We just really like chanting stuff. Random chants today, "Oh-kla-homa clap clap clapclapclap," "U S A! U S A!" "Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!" and "Ducks fly together!"

Anyways, I wrote way too much - sorry. Great competition! Great food! Great hosts! Great people!

'Twas spectacular indeed.
