Interesting scoring in that the rankings changed so much depending on the judges. No real consistency in the scoring. Just shows how difficult it is to score theater. Congratulations to all of the choirs for their amazing performances.

The fact that all four choirs in tier 1 each gave a different show and performance was amazing. We genuinely need to stop being salty when results come out. Is just show choir and once you leave hs these will be memories you will cherish forever. I say instead of posting scores and arguing about outcomes. We celebrate each school and their strengths.
Kennedy - I love what ms morales has done with all her groups. Executive order and First Ladies are giving the Cali big three a run for their money. The show is engaging the soloist are all so different. The opening soloist she is bringing a very classy jazz singer vibe to get this party started. The other female soloist who was doing don’t rain on my parade money you are making ms fanny Brice proud. Ms morales I hope you get to take your groups to nationals some day cause these kids bring it.
Sound fx - what can I say that hasn’t already been said the costumes , choreography and production design elevate this show to another level. You can see how much these kids have grown since blast and honestly congrats to you guys on ending your season with a bang.

Burbank - you guys have always had some of the strongest cleanest vocals I have ever heard. The dynamics and power you put into your singing isn’t matched. I’m always like how do vocals go that hard after those dance breaks unreal. Your vocals are as powerful as an avalanche, destroying everything in is path.

Burroughs ( let’s go I graduated in 2014) what Jen has created year after year since 2008 pushes the level of what show choir is suppose to be. And this year is no different I tend to like when powerhouse tones down sets and costumes cause then your allowed to be transported into the world they are creating. This show gave me the same feelings as going to the eras tour.

I feel like we all seem to forget what truly goes into these shows and the blood sweat and tears each student puts into their respective show.

Also keep in mind each student is between 14-18 and you complaing that they placed where they places makes them and their program feels bad . Instead of complaining about result. Maybe we should look at what it truly means to be in show choir as well as a show choir fan. You are all amazing people don’t ever forget it.

Thanks, Gabriel. That is spot on.

These groups are so incredible, it's all a tie as far as I'm concerned. The real winners are the audience.

I wanna second everything that Gabriel said. As a midwesterner, I have always had an affinity and appreciation for the California groups. Every year this region brings uniqueness, ingenuity, and emotion to the show choir world. Shout out the creative staff that work tirelessly on these shows. I mean, the majority of my favorite shows come from the Insync and Powerhouse performances, alone. It's safe to say that California show choir is a blessing.

I was able to catch some of the tier 2 groups on the livestream. I want to specifically show out Valley Vista. That group can sing! Make sure you check them out if you haven't already.

Have heard something about a three-way tie. Can anyone confirm and explain?

Would be interested to hear if this is true. Any explanation about breaking ties also.

Nothing was announced at the awards presentation other than individual awards, captions, and overall placements. There were no announcements made re time penalties, ties, or anything else.

While I cannot confirm that was the case, it is certainly possible that three groups could tie based on this competition's scoring method. This competition uses the borda count ranking method, where the raw scores of each judge are converted to ranks. These ranks are then added together, and the group with the lowest total wins.

One possible way that three groups could have ended with the same total is the following:

Group A: 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3
Group B: 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3
Group C: 1 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 3

In this case, each group's total was 10, which would result in a three-way tie. From there, most competitions move on to raw score to break that tie.

Just to clear the record, there was a three-way tie. It was broken by raw points.

My point is to stop searching for reasons to discredit other schools.. Let them celebrate instead of trying to dig for things. There is nothing you can do about it now the judges already made up their mind.

These questions are fine and appropriate. People are just trying to understand how the results came to be, not to discredit Los Al or any other school. Heaven knows the shoe has been on the other foot a couple times this year and much worse has been posted here regarding judges and scoring. SoundFX put on an amazing show last night, so congrats to them!

The judges decided they were tied. It could have been left as such, but the contest decided to break the tie. No one is digging for anything but the facts.

@NathanE I believe the way that would work out in consensus ordinalalso has an interesting gridlock.

Group A: 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3
Group B: 2 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 1
Group C: 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2

Three judges have A over B, three judges have B over C, three judges have C over A. I’m not sure of any other permutations of five judges can result in a three-way tie unless a judge had JFK over one of the three.

So the outcome was a tie? then show choir shoukd change it because it clearly says who win first, second and third.. They should change it immediately

Well, there are ways to break a tie. The most common tiebreaker is vocals/musicianship (in the South anyways), but the one used by this comp was raw score as mentioned earlier. Every comp has something in the rules about breaking ties.

Those were the rankings that gave us the tie. Group A is Los Al. Group B is Burroughs. Group C is Burbank. First two being show scores, last three being music scores.
