It is comical and also sad to see some of these posts about the state championship. Instead of congratulating the winners, conspiracy theories of collusion and even the weather took place. I suppose this is a way to make yourself feel better. Your school/child didn’t win and there is zero way on earth that could happen so I am going to vent on one of the places that kids come to read and air my grief to show my support.

Sad.

Pathetic.

But such is the way of the world now. Where truth and fact a can be washed away with someone crying and saying it didn’t happen. And for the foolish person who posted that Hurricane somehow shut the electric off. Here is my theory.

In secret I believe that the director of Hurricane Show Choir is secretly Thor.
It only makes sense. I believe he purposely walked outside, tapped his iPad to the ground, which then turned into mjolnir. Then he summoned a great wind storm which tore through the hurricane area knocking over trees and power lines DURING the heat wave performance. He did this to in fact bring more attention to their performance. Because that only makes sense right?

Or maybe he summoned lightning to hit the school? This could have happened! Never mind the trees that knocked over the power lines and destroyed a pole that you could actually see as you were pulling out of the hurricane high school. Visual factual things DO NOT MATTER.

And as far as Red Hot is concerned. There is nothing wrong with telling your child they done well. That they performed to the best of their ability, but still lost, happens everyday in life.

But again, it’s easier to come here and spout deception. And claim your school should have won. Blame the judges. Blame the host.
Deflection. The ultimate tool.

Red hot won because they were the best. But again, I am sure the judges were persuaded to change their mind and let them win because the director would have summoned mjolnir and destroyed their homes had they not done so. Yeah, that’s gotta be it.

Your right that Mr Kincaid is a super hero. He is a dedicated teacher. He is a rare breed that is able to consistently get the best from his students. I don't believe he focuses on winning. I believe he preaches do your best and his students respond. He has built a culture of excellence that students want to be part of. Cheating is not part of a culture like that.

Well said about Mr K.

I also believe all the kids that perform are special. It takes talent, courage, and an incredible amount of work to do what they do. I have had the privilege of watching dozens and dozens of different show choirs. It was always enjoyable and awesome to watch them all.

After watching all the groups today I think it is clear to see that allowing Hurricane to host this event and watching their director constantly talk to the judges throughout the day is definitely a bad idea. This should be held at a neutral site where the judges aren’t guided by the host. I am a WV show choir alumni and after the Winfield girls group brought me to tears with an amazing show, I was embarrassed that they didn’t win. It’s now obvious to me that there is some bias that helped Hurricane girls group win. Move this event to a neutral site, keep Hurricanes director away from the judges, and let the kids perform in an auditorium where there is better sound and possibly a backup generator.

Since you are an alum, I think you would understand that Kincaid is simply being hospitable to all of the judges. All of the scores and tapes have to be constantly collected as well as if they need any drinks or snacks. Your opinion also might be different than the judges who are educated in music and performance. Hurricane was kind enough to allow their space to be used AND they worked through a power outage so I think some thanks should be given for the commitment to making State a good experience.

The power was not a generator issue, it was a power line issue, hurricane had no control over that. in fact I think Hurricane handled the situation very well. as for Mr Kincaid, he is simply there to make sure the judges were taken care of, especially with the power outage that made things more difficult, he was just there to be a host since the 2 year rotation has fallen with hurricane.

Maybe let someone else beside the director “take care” of the judges during a competition in which you have choirs competing. That just makes sense. I thought the power outage was handled very well.

With all due respect to those groups in attendance, you claiming bias to Hurricane because in YOUR opinion a group should have won is not fair. Winfield has a great show this year, but when you claim that several renown and highly qualified judges have a bias towards Hurricane simply because they are the host school, is inappropriate.

Winfield treble are truly special. However, the emotion evoked by a show is not something on the grading sheet past a “general effect” or show design type scoring. Hurricane takes on a more difficult show than the rest of the state for both their mixed and treble groups and cleans/executes it to a higher quality than the rest of the state.

That’s not a put down to anyone else in WV, as anyone can plainly see that the level of show choir in WV has become extremely extremely high as it starts to gain ground on other powerhouse states of the area. It is my firm opinion that Hurricane would win this comp every year regardless of any format change and it seems to be the opinion of many others in the state as well. I hope you better consider the sorts of comments you make in the future, especially ones that promote this sort of nonsense.

Hurricane has hosted states the past two years but before this it was held at barboursville park by cabell midland, and then at a school in Morgantown. Hurricanes groups won both of those years as well. It’s not a matter of cheating at all. These judges are highly respected across the country and wouldn’t be swayed by some hospitality. The power going out was a town wide issue caused by a fire and could have happened anywhere. Hurricane handled it with professionalism and did everything to keep the competition running smoothly. The power even went out in the middle of hurricanes own show, which the kids handled with professionalism. Not to take away from other choirs, Winfield girls were amazing, but the level of difficulty is not the same level as hurricanes group. Difficulty level is factored in scoring. This is why they won, and it was well deserved.

As the director that is hosting the event next year and shadowed Mr. Kincaid for parts of yesterday and today I can tell you that this post couldn’t be further off base. When I was in the room and was too close to the judges, Mr. Kincaid was quick to ask me to remove myself to make sure there could be no mistaking that I was holding a personal conversation with the judges. The only time Mr. Kincaid is with the judges is when he is prepping them for the day and showing them how to use the scoring system, etc. He checks on them periodically to make sure there are no issues. I assure you this “bias” that you speak of doesn’t exist. I was actually surprised at just how hands-off he is in regard to the judges.

I ADORE Winfield's girls. They were fantastic. Hurricanes girls were ALSO fantastic today. I wouldn’t have wanted to be a judge on the panel today.

To call for a neutral site, etc. would also be a considerable cost to the vocal music association and we depend on directors to take on the BURDEN of hosting. It’s not an easy job.

We all have days the results don’t turn out the way we want, but we can’t simply blame the coordinator because they hired the judges.

This kind of discussion/comment is SO counterproductive and not in line with the values we are trying to teach our kids.

This is an extremely inappropriate, and outrageous post. Your entitled to your opinion on who should win, but to make an accusation that Hurricane's director is the only reason Hurricane won, it's complete ignorance. And you literally join the site the day of the competition, just so you could show your inherent bias towards a group. There is a great camaraderie between all the groups in WV. Please go somewhere else with your crap.

Red Hot is an unbelievable group. They constantly beat some of the best groups in the nation. West Virginia should be proud of this group that represents your state so well. Being from Loveland I don't usually root for them but I sure love to watch them. GO RED HOT!

I don't usually put my 2 cents in, but you guys do realize that the kids read these post too. And some of you are saying that the judges cheated and are biased and that so and so should have won instead of those who did win. All schools, all groups and all kids deserve high praises, they all work their behinds off. I'm sure the judges know more than you and I.

This is a really great point. This event has received a lot of unwarranted criticism; much of which has come from show choir parents. Participating students have demonstrated maturity in their posts on here and I'd say directors deserve credit for setting the record straight as well. It sounds like the director and organization team had their hands full today facing adversity and still managed to pull off a successful event; they should be given their kudos instead of accusations. We've always held showchoir.com to be a place of productive and constructive dialogue. I hope some adults will take notes from the sportsmanship and leadership of their students and directors.
