Quite a bit of talk about Carroll not making finals. Here is the link to their show if you missed them and would like to see for yourself. Great performance Carroll!!

If you know and are able to share, what do you think the issue is as this has been happening at comps in Indiana, too? You all always have amazing themes, vocals, etc. but have struggled to consistently make finals. Not trying to insult or be condescending. I've always been amazed by Carroll's shows and am dumbfounded as to what the judges are seeing. Thank you!

I think Carroll appears to have not placed very well in Indiana simply because Indiana is one of the most competitive show choir states. The sheer density of incredible groups there is insane, and groups that miss finals or don’t place at Indiana competitions could easily place or even win some contests in other states. Carroll is a great group, but they haven’t “placed well” in Indiana because they have been competing against many other great groups. That’s why you can never take a group’s record at face value without taking into account the competition they have faced when passing judgement on how good they are.

just sucks to see that being taken into judging. At least i think. there were just some inconsistency with the judging for a couple groups causing the the ranks to be different. I’m not saying it’s unfair. Just unfortunate.

Here’s my opinion on how i would have judged. No bias, but may be controversial, but just for the fun of it in my personal opinion.
6th: Petal “Soundsations”
5th: Findlay “First Edition”
4th: Ankeny “Spectrum”
3rd: Carroll “Minstrel Magic”/Loveland “By Request”
2nd: Carroll “Minstrel Magic”/Loveland “By Request”
1st: Los Alamitos “Sound FX”
VOCALS; CARROLL MINSTREL MAGIC
CHOREOGRAPHY: LOS ALAMITOS SOUND FX
Carroll was one of the best in my opinion and should have made finals. Their vocals were better than I had ever seen.

Putting things in an actual scoresheet will change what you may think the result is based on your own natural bias. For me, I tend to hear high-mid frequencies more clearly (also play Flute, Piccolo, Clarinet, and Saxophone), so a group like Spain Park will catch my ears because they have amazing high range Sopranos. In practice with the judging sheet, I end up putting Homewood and Oak Mountain ahead of them because those two are more well-rounded.

Another quick point… you’re really young. Once you get to be around my age (about twelve years from now), your experience will make you see and hear things differently. Petal is a great program, and you’ll get to study with one of the best directors in the South.

Another good consideration here is to think about why the results were what they were after the comp. Obviously you cannot always see actual scoresheets, but often times you can find the system used and consider why judges preferred certain groups.

With that being said, judges do have preferences for certain groups stylistically. The scores from prelims were posted on here and you can see a wide range in scoring for several groups, including Carroll. I think scoring comps on your own is great practice for training your ears and making you a more well rounded musician.

This was the best performance I’d seen of Carroll all year, obviously seeing it live helped, but I thought you guys were insanely fun and entertaining this weekend.

thank you, it means a lot. I know judging is completely opinionated, just having that gap kinda sucked. But we were able to have our day to enjoy the rest of these amazing groups and i loved every second of it. A great way to end off my show choir career by watching these groups.
