I haven't been able to find a video of Los Al's show so if someone has a video please share. This will be a great rematch between Los Al and Ankeny seeing that the one and only time they've gone head to head was right here in 2016 where Ankeny was able to snag show design and vocals. Obviously that was a while ago, but who knows it would be incredible to see Ankeny pull off a win here. Once I can actually watch Los Al's show I will be able to make an actual prediction not based off name-sake. Also I love the Southern representation we've got here. I could see a Southern group making finals.
I watched the live stream for Xtravaganza (Los Al's competition they host), and it appears that they are using the set theme that they had for 2020. I think it's smart that they did this because they only performed it at one competition that year before the lockdown. Btw it is an amazing show, I had the chance to see it live that year when they performed it at Burbank and it was incredible. So if you look up Los Alamitos Sound FX 2020 you should find the show!
This is tough competition I can already tell it’s going to be within points, but judging from this season I think it’ll be a fight between Ankeney and Los Al for the GC
With this week coming to a close, it’s time to shift all focus to this beauty of a competition. For the occasion I dug up some stats for the amazing large mixed groups. (I’m not the greatest statistician, so some may be off by a hair)
During the 2022 show choir season, this lineup has combined for:
49 competitions attended
18 GC’s 12 BV’s 20 BC’s 9 BB’s (and that is not including 1 GC / 1 BV from different tiers)
36 top 3 finishes
Only 13 placements outside the top 3. (Insane considering the competition they all go up against)
Out of the 12: 9 groups have received a GC, 6 have received BV, 10 have received BC, and 6 have received BB.
All of these groups are having fantastic seasons, and this is a great way (for many of them) to end their seasons competing against the best of the best.
To put it into perspective, here is the combined stats this lineup has produced over the past 5 years (2017-2022).
2017-2022
331 competitions attended
127 GC’s 84 1RU’s 50 2RU’s ( = 261 top 3 finishes) (they finish top 3, 78.85% of the time the past 5 years)
110 BV’s 130 BC’s 74 BB’s
(Not including 12 GC’s / 9 BV’s / 9 BC’s earned from other tiers)
There has been only 23 insistences were they have not placed / made finals the past 5 years. So, 93% of the time you can expect these groups to have made finals / place)
Again, I’m not the greatest statistician so some of my numbers could be off, but I thought I could try to shed some light onto the greatness this lineup has to offer. Good luck to all the groups competing, and I can’t wait to see how this shakes up!
I'm not counting anyone out this year! No doubt the usual suspects are phenomenal again - Los Alamitos, Loveland, Ankeny, etc. I'm also rooting for the "powerhouse underdogs" to make finals - Peoria Soundwave! I saw them a month ago and can't wait to see them again.
Does anyone else immediately say “Petoria” (from Family Guy) when they see the name Peoria? Best of luck to them at this contest. Lots of good groups coming here.
I haven't seen them in person, only on video. Their show designs/themes are super creative, but the actual singing and dancing is not quite at the same level as previous years (Auburn 2019 and Grenada 2019 and 2020 were AMAZING shows). They are still very solid groups, but unless they improve tremendously before Show Choir Nationals, I honestly don't see either of them making finals due to how many incredible groups will be here. If a Southern group were to make finals here, it will be Petal IMO. But you never know!
Thinking back on it, Auburn was very close to making finals here when they attended in 2019. They placed 7th in prelims and lots of people thought they should have made finals.
Literally had them in third taking a caption after watching prelims that day! AAAH!! Show choir is so subjective; every group that day put on a phenomenal show.
I personally was surprised at how low Petal placed there. Literally two weeks prior, they were almost unanimously ahead of the titans of the Midwest (WWS, Center Grove, Mt. Zion), only to place behind Center Grove, Findlay, and Glenwood at SCN. This season has been interesting to say the least.
