Was IC West at Kennedy last year? I don't remember but I do recall that Xavier was either 3rd or 4th RU - IC West wasn't in finals if I remember correctly.

Now after writing this I realize that that was one of those new things called sarcasm, right Jay? " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> I'm an idiot. But a helpful idiot.

Just so you know, West was in finals. They beat CR Xavier during the day, and lost to them at night, when it counted. I make no excuses, thats just what happened.

I'm really excited to see Linn-Mar's exhibition performance. I have heard from a number of people that 10th Street's show this year is EXCELLENT!

hey guys... I was just kidding around with my post, I obviously didn’t mean anything by it and I wasn’t expecting anyone to even acknowledge my post, I was just excited about this years good time company and I didn’t know it would create such a fuss... and I didn’t realize our image to the show choir community . Let me put it simply, I am just a gtc alum that misses show choir immensely and is excited for this competition is all, good luck to everyone and I hope to see you there!

I am really excited about this competition! I have been an alumni of show choir for 3 years now and I still can't get enough of it. I try to go to one competition a year and this is the one that I have chosen to go to because its such an AWESOME lineup. I want to wish ALL groups the best of luck!!!

As the director of Iowa City West High School's Good Time Company, I am familiar with this site, though I am an infrequent visitor, and I have never felt the need to post. When I logged in to see if there was any information on who was attending the Linn-Mar competition, I was surprised to see some discussion involving GTC. While I understand that conjecture and (usually) friendly bickering are par for the course on this site, let me encourage Showtime04 to please stop attempting to defend and promote GTC. While I truly appreciate and admire your school pride, I would hate to see you making enemies for our group before the competition season has even begun.

I am lucky to be working with an amazing group of young people. They are hard-working, talented, humble, and respectful. We will, as we do every year, put together the best show we can. If we surprise a few people this year and do better than expected--great! If not, I will still have a tremendous amount of pride in the character and work ethic of my students as well as the final product they produce. I have nothing but respect for all of the show choirs competing at Linn-Mar--especially City High. While I realize that there will always be a sense of competitiveness between our schools, Dr. Grove and I have worked to foster a sense of mutual respect and admiration between our vocal music programs. I am always impressed by anything performed by the City High Vocal Music Department, and I can assure you that this year's 4th Ave show will be no different.

I look forward to seeing all of you at Linn-Mar, and I truly hope you enjoy our show. Best of luck to everyone competing!

Mr. Durlam

" border="0" alt="offtopic.gif" /> lord.... i miss college already.

2nd- I really would love to see Xavier make night round. Like I said after Mo-Show last year, I thought they were SET for finals! LOTS of energy, GREAT choreography! It was just a wonderful show! And they just keep getting better year after year. Having said that, I still believe that because of the quality of groups this year, it will be tough for ANYBODY to make finals, let alone Xavier. That's what I really meant to say before...

3rd- KEVIN WORLEY!!!! I LOVED watching him in West Side Delegation a few (or many... lol) years ago. What a great performer!

4th- I forgot.... Did Xavier beat IC West at Kennedy last year? My mind has gone blank...

I will say that I am a bit sad to see Davenport Central not attending this competition. They have been a regular for some years now... and this is surely one of the sadder years for them not to attend. It's going to be a hell of a competition.

They have their work cut out for them, but I think they've solidly proved that the 2005 show that judges hated so much was a fluke.

It wasn't just the judges my friend. " border="0" alt="laugh.gif" /> (It's ok though, 2005 was a bad year for my school too)

I'm excited to see City High. I was thoroughly impressed seeing them perform at Johnston last year... those vocals were superb!

Well, this is the only group I've seen this year so far, and while it was only at their works in progress show, I have to say that unfortunately City high really didn't impress me this year. Of course it was early, but part of the reason they did so well last year, and didnt do well in 05 was their vocals, which were definately below par at that early junction this year. Also, the song selection this year is somewhat puzzling in my opinion. Of course they still will have great energy and good dancing, but I think it is more likely for this year to be more reminiscent of 2005 for city high, which is sad to me because i really like to see them do well.

You'd like to think that, wouldn't you? ;) To each their own, I suppose.

You should know by now that every year, West outdoes City by a respectable margin at Works In Progress. West almost always has solid vocals by then, whereas City has focused on choreography. That said, you're right- City wasn't very impressive at WIP, but that makes a lot of sense historically. Of course, history also shows them improving by leaps and bounds between WIP and the first competition, and I seem to recall that they blaze on past Good Time in the rankings... I will, however, be cheering on Good Time whenever and wherever I'm able to see them. They've come so far so fast, and it's awesome to watch them climb the ladder of competitiveness.

At any rate, for those who are interested, I did see 4th Ave's winter show last weekend. There's still work to be done, as with any show choir at this time of year, but they're pretty impressive. I'm not going to reveal the set; Linn-Mar's not far off anyway. Their vocal energy was lacking in the opener and ballad, and the choreography in the novelty needs spot-cleaning, but the show is awesome. They have a nicely-chosen middle three (the novelty is hilarious- it's nice to see a distinct novelty style finally emerging from Damon and 4th Avenue) sandwiched between an awesome opener and closer. Never have I seen a show choir manage to get the entire audience clapping solidly on the off-beat... They have their work cut out for them, but I think they've solidly proved that the 2005 show that judges hated so much was a fluke.

The judges are:

Dave Fehr - Clinton, Mississippi
Ryan Riewarts - Davenport, Iowa
Ly Tartell - Indianapolis, Indiana
April James - Chicago, Illinois
Kevin Worley - New York City - former Cedar Rapidian - CR Jefferson
Jim Berry - Iowa City, Iowa

Wow, that's a really nice lineup. Dave Fehr is showing up more and more the last few years. I'm always glad to see Jim Berry on a judging panel. He's a top-notch judge and a standout musician. At least at the end of the day, every group can be sure that their band got an accurate appraisal in this controversy-filled pasttime.

I'm really looking forward to this. I unfortunately cannot stay for finals, but I plan on being there for the entire day round. I hope to see some of you there!

I know my previous post stated that I was scared and anxious. I'm still those things, but after a practice we just had, I can say that personally I'm ready to do this. I'm so excited for Linn-Mar. This is by far my favorite competition, because most everyone is competing for the first time, and it's interesting what you learn here before moving on to other competitions.

I LOVE SUPERNOVA!!!

I am getting excited to see Xavier, you guys had a great show at Urbandale (which is the only time I saw it), and was shocked to not see you make finals in Mo Show, but your program keeps growing.

See you guys at Linn Mar!

Thanks for the support, we're all really excited for Supernova. Thanks for the encouragement, too, Jay - we're definitely the group with the chip on our shoulder because so many people have opinions like yours. The theme of our show is actually what it is because of those opinions - just see my signature. No one's denying that Laura and Ryan were "staples" of our program, you could say, but I think that we have a solid show and we're looking forward to performing and competing at Linn-Mar. I'm also really excited to see all the other groups at Linn-Mar, best of luck to everyone.

Well said!
