I'm a bit delayed with this, but I came back to the page and wanted to give a shoutout to OHIO groups for winning the large, medium, and small mixed divisions at this gargantuan contest! It's quite a feat and was interesting to see the impact of virtual competitions as so many of these choirs would not normally compete together. So nice job repping the Buckeye state - Medina, Edgewood, and Ada!
Was there a scoring error in Middle Mixed Group A (Tier III)? Last night it said that Spain Park won first place and people's champion with Appling Applause and Chelsea tied for second.
Negative. That was my error. I went back into that division to add Mt. Zion "Premiere" (since they were moved from small to medium) and it altered the placements in the system. Just some back end SCC stuff, but it's been corrected. Apologies.
Hey Everyone,
It is definitely understandable that things got a bit confusing as far as group placement. During the small mixed performances, we identifies two groups that exceeded the number of performers on the stage to be considered "small group" according to our event rules (28 performers or less). Those groups were NOT penalized, but were immediately removed from that category and placed into our mid mixed division (29-37 performers).
As for the Group A and B assignments, they were completely random. Our intent was simply to provide more ways for choirs to walk away with placement. So, in the divisions that were larger, we split them in half, and awarded each group a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. THEN awarded an overall division winner, which would be the highest score across that division regardless of what group they were in. I hope this makes sense, but I am happy to answer any questions anyone has.

Thank you! This was very helpful. This was a massive event y'all planned and with so many choirs from all over the place, it's understandable that the divisions changed a bit on the day of. Thanks for clarifying. I've gone ahead and moved the Mt. Zion and SF Roosevelt prep groups from Tier V and into the medium mixed divisions.
Alright so I reworked this page. Here's a quick key to delineating the divisions above:
Mixed Tier I - Large Mixed Division "A" Group
Mixed Tier II - Large Mixed Division "B" Group
Mixed Tier III - Medium Mixed Division "A" Group
Mixed Tier IV - Medium Mixed Division "B" Group"
Mixed Tier V - Small Mixed Division
S-G Tier I - Single-Gender Division "A" Group
S-G Tier II - Single-Gender Division "B" Group
***what the difference is between "A" and "B" groups is unclear.
I'm a tad confused about the Large Mixed divisions. The Simmons schedule shows different groupings than what they announced during their awards ceremony (i.e. Both Valley groups are listed as "A" on the schedule, but "Choralation" was announced as 2nd in the "B" group). So if folks can clear up who was actually "A" vs. "B" in the Large Mixed that'd be great! Also, we're in search of the small mixed and single-gender awards as well. Hopefully those will be less complicated.
edit: despite my confusion, I think Simmons deserves credit for this massive event. 15 states, 51 choirs. Simmons Smackdown was one of the early planners in the show choir community for a virtual contest and had a commitment to make it as big and interactive as possible. I think they accomplished that with their various social media challenges and engagement they did with the participating groups. Kudos to the Simmons staff for their creative thinking in this challenging year.
I wasn’t around foe the glory days of Cedar Rapids Jefferson but I imagine this is sort of what it felt like. What a fantastic lineup and it sounds like most things went smoothly.
Anyone from Simmons able to shed some light on what the *difference* was between the "A' and "B" groups (i.e. Large Mixed A Group and Large Mixed B Group, Middle Mixed A, Middle Mixed B)? Why are we giving our divisions, divisions? Y'all are going to have to give me a minute while I rework this event page.
The quick is that Medina is the overall grand champion. Woohoo Encore!
