I talked with some of my "Central Singers, Inc." friends today. They said that Johnston's show this year was amazing. They said that the vocals were superb. I asked "do you think they would have beat you?" and they all responded "Yes."
i agree with Mr Temple. last year we had a big problem with the HS Center running way late. we in momentum had to choose to either go to the awards ceremony or go see Vivace, who wasn't even the last group to go last year. If anything I think the HS Center should get done BEFORE the MS Center. just a suggestion for the schedule next year.
1st - Urbandale Vitality (506)
2nd - Waukee Spirit ( 474)
3rd - Iowa City West Showtime (464)
4th - Des Moines Roosevelt Rider Rhythm (451)
5th - Iowa City High City Lights (446)
6th - Davenport Central Blue Vibes (443)
7th - Papillion La Vista In Motion (442)
8th - Papillion La Vista Heart & Soul (423)
9th - Indianola Flip Side (425)
10th - Southeast Polk Vocal Gold (421)
11th - Des Moines Lincoln Sound Attraction (417)
Here's a suggestion for future Showzams and any other competition really....and obviously I feel this way since my group was selected to perform first in the finals.
At Linn-Mar's "Supernova" the host choir performs in exhibition at the beginning of finals. I think this is a great idea as it gives the choir that has to perform first an extra 25-30 minutes to prepare. As it turned out we were picked out of the proverbial hat to go first and since we performed very late in the day that meant that we performed two shows within about 2 hours of each other. It also meant that we had about 15 minutes from the time we finally made it back to our homeroom through the ocean of people leaving awards and the time our hosts started moving us to the run through. That's not a very long time to dress and fix hair and makeup.
In addition, the awards for the HS performance center didn't even begin until 7:00 when we were already in run through for finals with our varsity choir. I think the directors and students that worked so hard to put these shows together should have the opportunity to enjoy the fruits of their labor. Mr. Woodin and I obviously couldn't attend the award ceremony for the preps and Vitality was allowed to celebrate their victory for about 30 seconds total before they were hurried back across the parking lot to the MS for finals.
The only thing bad about the competition besides the small area was that there were no programs. I was sad.
I agree. Many people like to keep them in scrapbooks. It is great to have the printed sheets, but programs add a great deal and should be a money maker for the school if done with advertisements, etc.
Congrats to everyone that made finals last night. I got to pretty much watch all of them except for if you went before or after LC. I thought everyone did an amazing job. Congrats to Totino. Loved the show. Hope I get to go back again next year.
I just Want to Say Great job To all of the Groups At Johnston Yesterday, andan even bigger thanks to Johnston themselves for the great accomadations and great setup, it made it Really aton of fun.
Urbandale and Iowa City High,...WOW! What a contest! 2000 points, and only 3 points separating the top three groups! DANG!!! Totino is an incredible group that's always first-class and extremely innovative in their shows, so totally give them their props! I continue to be honored to work with both Studio and 4th Ave. and I wish you all could know how proud I am of you! Keep pushing for the next goal,...and push hard! God Bless, Damon

Roustabout/Heartbreak hotel (all shook up)
Burnin Love/All shook up (all shook up)
I just have to say that that was one of the most fun Comps that I have been two. Keep in mind that I have been part of company for three years now i can't think of a time when I've had more fun. Congrats to everyone one. There was so much effort andwonderful shows. It was a pleasure and a joy to compete with all of you. I'd love to get to knwo some of you better so don't be shy and drop me a message. Love you all. MUWAH!!!
Look at the score sheets. Blend and Balance with the band is always a huge factor. If you can't hear you over your band, then how can they give you best vocals. That's usually one bigger of the many deciding factors.
Just Wondering... what does everybody think it takes to win best vocals? Im not sure we (Iowa City West) actually deserve best vocals, but i can't say that we dont think our choir can sing pretty darn well and floor people while doing it. I was just curious to hear from everybody what you think it takes to win the best vocals award.
Thats a good question. The problem is, we (iowa city west) have a quite good tone, and so sometimes we are lax on things like diction and dynamics, which probably hurts us a lot when you think about how there are actually a number of categories on which vocals are scored. In truth, dynamics i think are the most important thing when it comes to winning best vocals.
