I can second the part about where you were siting. People on the floor told me we were blowing our heads off yet people up in the bleachers said we were just right. I thought going into awards there were probably three or four groups that could have taken it, talent wise states this year was much strong then it has been in past years. I saw everyone that placed expect Martinsburg and I thought everyone did a great job
no need to fight with you about it, I just liked Winfield's sound better. I think a lot of the problem with hearing them had to do with the mics because after lunch everyone seemed a lot louder, and there is no way Huntington could really be putting out more sound then Winfield. That's odd you though St. Albans band was too loud...I could hardly hear them? The horns anyway.
I just think sometimes judges get good choral singing and loud choral singing mixed up.

Placement was a key for hearing what you wanted to hear. You must've been on the side closest to the parking lot because I was near the middle and heard them just fine. Mrs. Kennedy isn't perfect with her bands, but she comes pretty darn close. I absolutely loved the quartet number with the instrumental features. That was my favorite part of the day.
Honestly, I think that Morgantown should've beaten Poca (I didnt get to see Winfield), and St. Albans and Hurricane were placed correctly.
By the way, Hurricane wasn't screaming...it's called projection.

Guys, without a doubt, Hurricane was the most phenomenal show choir of the day. I've been a long fan of the powerful show choirs that West Virginia has thrown out in the past, but Hurricane was amazing and the competition there was just awesome all day...here's my rundown:
Winfield: I actually came early just so I could see your show, since I wasn't able to see it at Teays Valley when I went. The show concept was very unique and a great idea I think. It was great that you could get the crowd involved with your show, but at the same time, it seemed pretty predictable. Who would want Spanish over Japanese, or a Latin Salsa over a good ol' Hoedown? I came down with two friends and at the end of the show, one of them had no idea what your show was about. It was after we left that I had to explain that all your songs were about decisions. The band sounded great, but the drums were a little loud and it really covered up the sound. I don't know where the person from Martinsburg could say that you all had the best vocals all day. I thought they were the third best after Hurricane and St. Albans, simply because you could hear the other two. But really, a great show idea, and only you all could pull that off.
Martinsburg: Quite a different show choir from the powerhouse that used to place 2nd and 1st at States just three years ago. As always, the choreography was stellar, a little sloppy at times, and, for the most part, made up for the lack of strong vocals. But in all honesty, I miss the Martinsburg of old.
St. Albans: I had never seen your show choir until yesterday, but I've known Gail Kennedy for a LONG time and I knew she wouldn't let me down, and she didn't. Just a great show, a little toooooooo......formal I would say at the beginning. The ballroom dancing and stuff was a little odd. But I agree with some of the others, the band (i.e. the piano) was extremely loud, but unlike Winfield, you were still able to sing over it pretty well.
Poca: I can see that you all are returning to prominence after the departure of David Legg. I think this year's show was a lot better than last year's and I know if you just keep it up, you'll be in the top three again next year. Good theme, and good song choices.
Morgantown: I was totally shocked when you didn't place in the top five, I really was. The show choir didn't really sing together that much, but overall, the dancing and singing was top-notch and I was really impressed, my compliments to your band as well, along with the two top soloists in the State.
Hurricane: Simply stunning. I don't understand where people could possibly say it sounded like you were screaming. You were the only group that I could hear every word clearly (except during the tap number). Powerful energy, I was lucky enough to be sitting near the judges and Teays Valley's director was constantly complimenting you on your energy. It seemed like you never backed off this year and it just kept coming. Your choreographer outdid herself this year...and of course, Kim Edwards...wow...always knows how to do a show. Singing "Tradition" could have been the riskiest song for show choir, but only you all could pull of such a Broadway song. Just a phenomenal performance, and there was no doubt in my mind that you all would take the Grand Champion trophy at the end of the day.
I'll go ahead and post my top three in all the categories as well:
Vocals:
1st- Hurricane
2nd- St. Albans
3rd- Winfield
It was a great competition, but at the end of the day, Hurricane just had that wow factor that I was looking for all day. Great selection of songs, excellent execution, stellar performance. Good luck everyone in the next competition season, and I really hope to see a lot of you next year as well.
States are going to be held at Princeton next year, and they have no show choir
Did martinsbugh buy there show? i saw the exact same show from a group in Nashville that was from Alabama...same choregraphy everything???

Not from Martinsburg but they normally do old Petal and GCS shows...they do it well though so it's not that big a deal. The group you saw from Alabama was using old stuff as well most likely

I'll try to give a run down sence no one else has yet
Winfield- I was a little shocked to see you guys going that early...10:30? It happens I guess. Last time I'd seen you was at Teays Valley and I was amazed by how much better you'd gotten. Sorry Hurricane but Winfield had the best Vocals of the day, much more musical. I didn't feel like I was being yelled at.
How'd I saw it
Grand Champion- Winfield
1 RU- Hurricane
2 RU- Martinsburg
3 RU- Poca
4 RU- St. Albans
Vocals- Winfield
Choreography- no one really wowed me but probably Winfield or Hurricane would have deserved it.
Band- Morgantown[QUOTE]
You think 10:30 is bad? We were originally selected for the 9:00 slot (1st of the day) and Buffalo graciously volunteered to switch times with us. Needless to say, it was definitely a little weird for us, too!
Wow! Thanks for the compliments for Winfield GA! Maybe next year! Unfortunately for us, we won't be part of it because our son's a 4-year senior this year. We'll probably be in the audience though. Martinsburg, I missed your show -a couple of us went to lunch then, but all the others who saw you said it was really good and were sure you would make the "top 5"! Congratulations!

Hurricane- Same show you guys did at Poca. No better no worse. Choreography was messy, but the speed you did it at I guess you were trying to hide actully having to work on it. Your vocals were good but it was just....loud and in your face the whole show.
St. Albans- the shock of the day. And I mean your placement. Vocally you weren't bad at all...but I couldn't hear your band, your dancing was a mess, and the show was just plain boring. I guess that's David Legg for you.
Poca- I was a bit dissapointed...not that you were bad. You were really pretty good..but...I don't know part of me longs for the old Poca...vocally anyway. These shows are at lest interesting.
Martinsburg- WOW....best show I've seen out of you guys all year. Everytihng was just clicking...glad to see you guys pull it together at the end of the year. Vocals weren't overly strong but the rest of the show made up for it.
and i'll do one more
Morgantown-umm.....different. It didn't really seem like show choir to me. You guys hardly ever sang as a choir. When you finally did start singing and dancing together at the end your sound just died. You have the talent you just need to re think what you do. Band was amazing though.
