I believe "Chain Reaction" and "Ignition" are both 8th grade choirs; "Dynamite" and "Inferno Fusion" are both 9th grade choirs. They are split up based on what high school they will be attending when the district splits.
See...I knew I'd get it wrong.

Not necessarily. I think you're missing the point. Say you have three different pools of fish. These fish are dueling goldfish. Totally badass, right? Anyway, the top three fish in pool A could be totally destroyed by the 12th place fish in pool B. Likewise, pool C could have the best (or worse) fish in the world, but you have no way of knowing unless you put them all in the same pool. In a (statistically) ideal world, every show choir would compete in one massive competition.

That's kind of why it's so hard to judge different show choirs against each other. We're all competing in different pools (competitions, even states) and unless those pools get adequately mixed up, it's difficult (and unfair) to say which fish is best.

Unless a show choir competes in other states (other pools) it's difficult to say how good they would be against the show choirs who compete in that state.

Lawrence Central competed against out of state groups only once last year and got third behind Fairfield (Illinois) and Troy (Missouri)

Center Grove only competed against out-of-staters Mt. Zion and Edgewood. Both in competitions which were
1- held in indianapolis
2- weren't the most impressive of wins

Franklin Central IS a powerhouse and beat both Waubonsie and Fairfield last year but lost to Solon (which isn't exactly a terrible loss) but other than those two, they only faced other Indiana schools and Mt. Zion who aren't what they used to be

Carmel did not compete with an out of state group last year.

This is by no means a bash on Indiana choirs. It is just to point out that, for the most part, Indiana schools stay in Indiana. This leaves a very small frame of reference.

This reminds me. Jeff, if this is the 2nd longest running comp, what is first? And how long?

Alright so I need some help. I'm in the process of putting together the Day One event which can be found here, but I'm confused in regard to Ankeny Northview MS. So according to the competition schedule found via the Urby website (here) Ankeny Northview MS is labeled as bringing their groups "Dynamite" and "Inferno Fusion" ... however according to the SCC database, the Ankeny Northview MS groups are called "Chain Reaction" and "Ignition".

Lots of combustible terms that have me confused and I wasn't able to find anything out on Google. So does anyone know if Ankeny Northview MS retired those previous names and are now going with "Dynamite" and "Inferno Fusion"? If so, which is their higher level group and which is the lower?

Or are there multiple Ankeny Middle Schools? According to the Johnston thread, the Ankeny MS groups "Ignition" and "Chain Reaction" competed a few weeks ago and the schedule used those nicknames, not "Dynamite" or "Inferno Fusion".

So yeah, anyone want to help me out?

This is our 30th annual event which makes us the second longest running competition in the nation behind Bishop Luers.

I disagree. Carmel, Center Grove, Lawrence Central and Franklin Central would all make finals at Urbandale for sure even if they were all competing here. They would ALL beat out the Iowa/Nebraska/Minnesota groups. Zionsville and Ben Davis would also make finals with the current Urbandale line-up, and Zionsville would even have a chance if you just combined Urbandale and LJ's competitions.

I know a lot of you younger Iowa kids don't know much about these Indiana show choirs, but these are major powerhouse show choirs, and have been for years and years and years.

As most people in Iowa already know, the Ankeny school district is dividing into two separate high schools beginning next year: Ankeny High and Ankeny Centennial.

Several years back when next year’s seniors were in 7th grade they began dividing up those kids into groups that were separated along the same geographical boundaries that would separate them once they became the first senior class in the new high schools. This meant they had twice as many middle school show choirs. Sadly it also meant that they only got to compete half as many times since they took turns competing essentially the same competition schedule they used before the division.

They used to have “Internal Combustion” (or IC) which was their 9th grade choir and “### Watts” which was their middle school choir. (The ### was the number of members in the group. I don’t know what was their highest number, but I remember it being in the range of 130-140 kids at some point who would all perform on stage AT THE SAME TIME. Transitions between songs were…challenging.) They now have two 9th grade groups and two middle school groups. Inferno Fusion is the 9th grade group and Dynamite is the middle school group competing at Urbandale. I’m not 100 percent sure, but I think “Chain Reaction” is the other 9th grade group and “Ignition” is the other middle school group.

I Think this comp would be #2 just based on
1- competition for 1st
2- defending FAME Natl. Champs
3- Real Powerhouses from 4 states coming

I would rate this one at #2, right behind the show at Wheaton Warrenville South.
Los Al has Burbank, Wheaton-Warrenville, Burroughs, Twinsburg, and Homewood among others this year. It might not have Clinton to get you all hot and bothered, but it's way up there along with Lafayette Jeff.
