In my experience, I am aware of very few incidents when any member asked leaving the stage would admit they had not given their all.
Most of what you are saying is right on, and I think most students are trying their hardest each time they go up to perform. On the other hand, I have heard on several occasions people say they are "saving themselves for finals" or the like. Or directors who choose to withhold a certain element from the show to give the finals performance an extra "bang." It may not happen routinely, but it does happen. My post was really about the vulnerability of spots being at risk and that many times placements can shift in finals, meaning that you can't let your personal performance be the variable that gives a judge an excuse to make those shifts. That doesn't mean that I felt any of the groups at this competition did that or that they won't take off points for whatever reason they feel like anyway.

I do agree with you about judging, biases, and consistency. That is one thing I think is universal in the show choir world regardless of region. Unfortunately, these kinds of prejudices mirror real life and we just have to deal with them the best we can. I believe there are a lot of honest, hard working judges out there who do a great job. It's unfortunate that it only takes one or two to really throw a wrench into the system. That being said, I think show choir as an activity gets better every year and hopefully those involved in making decisions that effect the outcomes at events are learning and adjusting as time goes by too.

Was there different divisions in prelims? If so, how were they done?
No, there were not divisions. I messaged the director and asked about divisions when the schedule came out and got the following response:

Since we are only hosting 11 groups, we have opted to not do classes this time. Just about all of them are from small schools.

iPad is being difficult...

But, I love this idea!

The drama and suspense and truth coming out of being able to call out the completely off the wall, ridiculous scoring judge at a competition... Just hopefully not during awards... And would we have to pay money? Lol

Haakon, we will have to agree that it would have to be an "oof" for any choir to receive this change of position. However, and unfortunately, we also must agree that this "show choir world" we live in is rife with mystery and intrigue. The fact that competitions are not easily judged, since it is allowed to be so subjective, is to put it mildly. Your position that all participants must bring it all every time is a well known axiom in show choir. In my experience, I am aware of very few incidents when any member asked leaving the stage would admit they had not given their all.

What I believe is a sad admission is that the judges could not necessarily give that same answer. It sure seems from time to time that they are not always completely engaged. Their comments are all over the board. Their observations / comments from prelims to finals and among themselves are in such opposition that it is hard to believe that the same people are observing the same events and choirs.

One must admit that the show choir world is filled with bias and prejudice. From state to state there are clear distinctions in expectations and as a result specific styles. From competition to competition, where judges return year by year, there are prejudgments made based on particular choirs past performances as opposed to what that choir is actually doing on the stage that year at that moment.

Hopefully, some day show choir will find a method by which judging can be mostly objective and only a little subjective and therefore become more like Olympic events where there are actual metrics.

You may recall in this past summer Olympics the female gymnast was allowed to appeal their score and through objective measure her score and ultimately her position was improved. That is what we should all strive for and get out of the petty downward spiral that appears to be the norm.

Sincerely offered to Show Choir across the country

Thanks for the info, Chris - that definitely helps!

Oof, that's gotta sting being first in prelims with all three captions and then slipping into second in the evening round. Then again, I bet Teays Valley was tickled pink! I remember watching diving during the Olympics last year and from round to round seeing the placements shift and people get left out of successive rounds as a result. It's a lesson for everyone: you've got to bring your best every time you step on the stage!

I would like to thank Mrs. Fox and Mrs Duprey for the outstanding hospitality while visiting the Double H Show Choir Showcase. A lot of work and execution for their first Show Choir event and it appeared flawless! Congratulations to you, your staff and hosts/hostesses.
I was introduced to a lot of fans of "The Walking Dead" and we took many photos together throughout the day. A warm reception indeed and I enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you for taking care of the extra dressing room and I received a lot on interesting looks and comments all day long.
I hope to see you all at The Classic at T V H S in March.
I didn't get the M C's name but if someone can forward me his e-mail, I have a photo for him.

Thanks to All, Ryk

Hello Ryk!
My name is Eric Kirby and I was one of the two MC's last night at the showcase. It was a pleasure to meet you last night and I would love it if you could send the picture to me. My email is [email protected] and as you may remember I am a HUGE fan of The Walking Dead, both the show and comic. I am actually watching the latest episode right now! I have already liked your fan page on Facebook, though I can't seem to find the correct twitter account.

Also, I want to clear up who won the soloist competition. Female soloist Makenna Cabe from Lehman Catholic High School won with her performance of "Don't Rain on My Parade" from the musical Funny Girl. Male soloist Zach Scott from Anderson High School won with his performance of "Proud of Your Boy" from the musical Aladdin. Both soloists did an incredible job and I am so glad I had the opportunity to hear them.

I must say, I was thoroughly impressed with each group's performance; there wasn't one show I did not enjoy. Thank you to each and every performer, staff, parent, and visitor who could make it to the showcase. Everyone I had the pleasure of running into were nothing short of incredible. Thank you all for making our first competition a huge success. If there was anything you found to hinder your enjoyment please send me an email and let me know so that we can ensure it never happens again.

Why does it always reply to the wrong person? That was in response to the posts about finals judging.
It doesn't, you're just clicking the wrong quote button. The buttons for any associated post are at the bottom of the post, not the top. Also, when you click "quote," their post shows up in your reply box, so you always know if you're replying to the correct person before you submit your reply.

I would like to point out the problem with your comparison of the Olympic diving competition and the final performances last night at the Hamilton & Harrison Double H Showcase 2013. As you state, you were actually watching the Olympic diving competition whereas you did not see the finals from last night. I believe you are not in a position to imply not all choirs brought their best when they stepped on the stage. Last night certainly provided a lesson for some participants, however, it was not the maxim you contributed.
My comparison to the Olympics was simply that in any given round groups can do better or worse than the previous round, allowing for a shift in overall positions. If this wasn't the case, there would be no point to having finals at all. It wasn't a critique on any specific group, just that in general, everyone has to bring their full potential every time or you risk your placement. Based on the scores at this competition, there are only two possible outcomes (according to the judges): either Colerain perfomed better in prelims than they did in finals, or Teays performed better in finals than they did in prelims. (Well, or both). That doesn't equate to "Colerain sucks!;" it's just an observation. Certainly (as I also indicated), it's got to sting being on top in prelims and then barely losing it in finals. I certainly sympathize with that kind of frustration, and it never feels good. In any case, my point was as intended.

Was band score factored in or something? How do you win best vocals and Choreo and not get GC?
They won those caption awards for the prelims performances. For finals, everyone's scores started over. They didn't give any captions for the final performances.

BTW, typically at Ohio competitions band and general show concept are scored aspects of the show. While it is rare that you win vocals and choreography and don't get first, in a tight race it is possible.

It was really close in prelims. Teays also tied for best choreography. And everyone started at zero again when it was in finals. Every judge put the choir out of 100 points. It was a really small point range between the top 4 groups, so it was anyone's game in finals.

We didn't do rankings at night, the judges scored like they would during the prelims. We also added a fourth judge to finals.

Regardless, they were prelim awards.

I remember best Female Soloist went to Colerain it was Pam McDermott (same as at Portsmouth). I'm not sure about Male soloist though.
