I think this is a cool award and I've never seen it used anywhere else. If I remember correctly, last year Piqua won it for their use of the giant red freak flag. I wish more competitions had an award like that.

At the 2009 Lebanon Show Choir Comp Edgewood recieved this award for our opener the circle of life off topic but it's the only time i've ever heard of that award.

I very rarely see combos NOT made up of all students in Ohio, honestly. At most, directors will play keyboard.
I've seen this scoring at quite a few competitions and I like the strategy; it clarifies some gossip I heard about the scoring haha. Were completely new score sheets used in determining finals in this case or were the judges scores from the daytime combined with those of the finals performance?

Piqua has an all student combo. I believe Findlay is also. They won best combo at Ada.

For the evening finals, we used five judges, each with a full sheet (breakdown - 80 vocals, 60 visual, 40 combo, 40 show). In order to level the level things out a bit and avoid bias, we opted to drop the high judge and low judge score for each group. Therefore, the total amount of points possible per group was 660. The grand champion was the group with the most points out of 660; captions were awarded during the daytime competition. As an additional note, the dropping of hi-low in finals did not effect the grand champion result in this competition.

Anyways, I think I'll give a couple of my thoughts from the competition, as well as info anyone may have missed. I've got to say, this is without a doubt one of my favorite competitions, simply because it has it all: a stunning auditorium, great food, friendly staff, a well-maintained schedule, etc. However, I believe there was a mix-up in both the vocal and visual caption awards, but I wasn't completely sure.

I'd just like to note that in the day round, Teays was 1 point out of finals. After the finals performances, the top three choirs were within roughly three points of each other, with Findlay 1/2 point behind Clover Hill. After that, about 10-15 points or more separated each group after Twinsburg. I didn't see every choir, so I couldn't really give a prediction anyway, but I did see Piqua, Findlay and Clover Hill.

Piqua: Firstly, thanks to a bunch of Piqua people for putting up with me and my family as we sat in the very front row. Luckily, we were able to find seats in the second row without causing too much trouble. On to the show.. You have a fantastic opener and fourth number. Those are probably the high points for me, simply because they are amazing songs in the first place, and they executed well. Also, I realize this may sound creepy, but girl who's front and center on the fourth number, you may be one of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen. The second song served its purpose well, the ballad was a really great arrangement of two solid songs, and the closer had plenty of intensity. I didn't get a chance to see Twinsburg, but I thought you guys would most likely get third.

Findlay: I'm sure I must've been awfully sleepy at the end of your invitational, because it seemed like I was watching a completely different show. There was literally not one moment when I was not entertained. Your opener is one of my favorites so far this year. The male soloist on the ballad may have one of the most spectacular voices I've ever heard, and the rollerskating was, of course, awesome as well. I really think it could've gone either way between you and Clover Hill. And speaking of Clover Hill.. *segue*

Clover Hill: Well, I can say with confidence that you really took us all by surprise, in a good way. I think some people had never even heard of you guys, which hard to believe, seeing as though how wonderfully you performed. You had the most energy of anyone, and you had some really rich, powerful, "wall of sound" vocals. I wish you all the best of luck for the remainder of your season.

Well, looks like that's my first in-depth review thingy. I feel kind of accomplished.

Im pretty sure Clover's band is mostly if not all students. They were amazing the past two years, watch their closer from last year and you'll see the horns onstage for the bow. Congrats Clover Hill! I can't wait to see yall @ River City!

From my experience, at most Ohio competitions, you are allowed to have adults in your band, but students are preferred. The band is judged the same no matter what, but to win the best combo award you can only have a maximum of one adult in your band. So let's say a group with an all adult band gets the highest combo score at a competition. They would get all those points, but the trophy for best combo would go to the next highest combo score for a group with a student band (with one or no adult).

Could anyone say either Clover Hill's or Findlay's shows? I'm just curious

Thanks for taking the time to come on and explain your system. Very helpful.

I'm curious for these competitions where a band score actually has weight on who wins; are all of these groups backed by entirely student bands? If not, does a group automatically forfeit their band score? 40 points out of 220 per judge is a huge amount.

This looks odd to me... How did Twinsburg take home so many caption awards and end up as 2RU? Does anyone know the scoring system or the weight of each category in the overall score?
Yes I didn't want to take away from Clover Hill but I was also curious as to how the scoring took place here

I know that Best Vocals and Best Choreography were awarded in the daytime. The point spread was also very tight between the top five groups, I believe there was a 16-point difference between first and fifth.

I'm not sure, but I think the score sheet was weighted more heavily in vocals, but I didn't see it myself.

Clover Hill's women's group, Irridescence(?) was awarded the Judges' Choice for their Wonder Woman medley. I remember thinking, "Well now, there's something you don't see everyday. 40 or so Wonder Women on stage!"

I remember that Clover Hill got Judge's Choice, but which song or section were they awarded for? I didn't catch it at the awards.

Judge's Choice is...something that sticks out in the judge's minds...a song, a moment, a dance break, a visual effect, a vocal moment...basically anything that left an impression in a positive way. There is no score involved. It is a fun award to reward a group/director for coming up with something creative that gets the judges talking!

Its awarded to a group usually for a number that is done in the show that the judges really enjoyed.
